What does it mean when my snow blower has a ton of white/gray smoke coming out of it for the first few minutes it is running?
The gas cap shows I need a 40:1 gas:oil mix. What does that mean exactly? If I have a gallon container of gas, how much oil do I add to it?
If it helps, it is a Craftsman model 536.885211
5.0 HP 21" Auger.
I don't know what the engine type is.
Thanks!

Did you tilt the engine to its side or has it sat for a long period of time? Typically the smoke would be from oil collection in the exhaust (blueish white). 40:1 oil mix is 6.4 ounces of oil to 2 U.S. gallons of gasoline. You can buy small bottles of oil ready to mix for most makes of small engines. They usally come ready to mix (1 can / bottle to 2 gallons.

Adam, you're not thinking of helping out in Oswego, NY are you??

If this winter in Eagleville is anything like ths winter in Jermyn, this must be the first time you started your snowblower. Did you put the gas/oil in your snowblower earlier this season? If so, as Tux said, pretty typical for that to occur.

Sooo funny.... Hey Mike if ya wanna see snow come on up. Plenty here right now. As for that snow blower thang.... well 2 arms an a shovel leaves more gas to drive the vette around with.
Besides with all of this snow, working in the garage gets alot easier.

Adam do yourself a favor run 50:1 2 cycle mix your snowblower will run much better. At work we have chain saws and weed whackers and small rotor tillers that say use 32:1 and we run 50:1 in everything, been running for years. Quicker starts and less smoke. Any hardware store has 2 cycle mix for 1 to 5 gallon mixtures.

Adam I buy the 5.3 oz oil and mix it with 1 Gal of gas. You can get the 5.3 oz oil at sears
Just buy one of these and you won't have to worry about mixing oil and smoking problems.
