Until this last month my daily driver has been a 1997 S-10 Blazer. It now has 292,653 miles on it and every day there is a new rattle from somewhere. Anyway my wife won't leave town in it and I don't take it unless I'm carrying my phone. It hasn't let me down yet but its time is over.
Well I started looking about a month ago and finally decided I wanted a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Several visits to the local dealership and the owner knew exactly what I was looking for. I was not in a real hurry. After all it's summer the the only inconvience is that I have to drive the vette.
Two nites ago when I came home there was a message for me that said they found exactly what I was looking for. I called the next morning to say I'd drop by that nite. It was a 2005 Jeep Grande Cherokee Limited with 20,000 miles on it. You couldn't even see scuff marks on the brake peddle. It had a 5.7 Hemi and I don't think it was missing an option that was available. I put a down payment on it and made arrangements to do the final purchase on Sat. Had to get my $ togeather. That was last nite.
Today--late this afternoon, the owner of the dealership calls me at work. (he was called in on his day off to make the call) It seems the Police Dept of the neighboring town had purchased the vehicle the day before I was called to look at it. There was no purchase agreement written out', no down payment made, and no record of the deal except when they came looking for the vehicle.
The police dept threatened the dealership with a law suit and a freeze on the sale if they didn't deliver.
I've been promised an exceptional deal on a comporable Jeep Grande Cherokee Limited. We will have to see what happens

He who puts the money down should have first dibs. I would consider a consultation with a lawyer about this deal. It sounds just a little fishy to me.

They were wanting you to ante up more cash...I'd be willing to bet there was no other deal with anyone else...
I'd tell them to get, well, you know...I sure wouldn't do another deal with them, but I'd let them know why.
They do that crap here all the time.

Yup ! Sounds like a "line" to me. If you're not gettin' that original deal, I wouldn't do business with them at all
..........Wish you better luck brother.

I agree with Joel. I certainly wouldn't purchase another vehicle from them, no matter how good of a deal they gave me.
Now from the civil law aspect of the deal. If the police dept. had made a verbal agreement to purchase the vehicle, there didn't have to be a contract signed. In civil court, a verbal contract is just as binding as a signed contract.
This could be a blessing in disguise for you. If you have driven the Blazer for 10 years and put 292k miles on it, this means you are driving about 29k miles annually. With the Grand Cherokee's 330 hp Hemi engine you might average 17MPG if you're lucky and do no towing. Assuming gas to stay at $3 per gallon, you would spend over $5,100 annually in gas alone.

Call the police dept. and ask them if they are purchashing the Jeep. That way you know if they are pulling a fast one. If they are then I would not deal with them at all!
Other than that I hope all's well with you & the family.

Keep the S-10!! I put 249K on my '96. Have 213K on my 97' and 139K on my '98. I will admit the 98' is the worst of the 3 for problems and my '97 seems to be bullet-proof.
Call the police department and tell them your 2005 Jeep Grande Cherokee was stolen
No wait that won't work. I would just let that dealership kow that they lost your business and anyone elses that you talk to.

Definitely sounds like a bait 'n' switch to me. Personally, I wouldn't give them any money - that just reinforces the behavior.
