Topic: Trailering Info Needed
in Forum: General Non-Vette Discussion
Guys I have owned a corvette for the past 31 years but I have never hauled one on a trailer. Due to my medical condition I'm forced to trailer it to PF. I can assure you that I'd much rather be driving it there but that's impossible for me to do.
I need to know exactly what you guys hook the tie-down straps to on the front and rear of the car. It looks to me as though you would need 4 foot arms to reach much of anything that would be stable enough to hook to.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
PS if this is a joke like Joel's one i kill you. Don't forget i have a winchester and a S&W Magnum.Point.

Jim, it is a pain to get to the areas you need to, to properly strap your car down. I use two straps on the front, crossed, and one on the rear.
I hook from one side on the front, over the lower control arm on the opposite side, and back to the trailer hook. Then I do the same from the other side.
On the rear, I use a ratchet strap, hooked to the trailer at the rear, over the center of the diff., and then to the other side and hook.
It may not make any sense the way I describe it, but, I you need, I can draw a diagram, and post it.
Be sure to use really strong straps. Mine are 3&4" wide. (They are some of the same straps I used to use as a trucker driver.)

Joel,
I think I understand what you're saying. My only problem is getting the strap "to and around" the differential. I might have to jack the car up after it's on the trailer in order to do it. The very back section of the trailer in slanted down, so it might not be as hard as i'm anticipating.
I'm going to load it a couple of days before we leave.....just in case.
Thanks for the info

One other little tip. Do not set your e-brake once you get the car tied down. The movement of the car, even the little that it will move, can, and has, damaged the e-brakes of many 65-82 'Vettes!! I know it may sound silly, but, I have seen the mass of broken little e-brake peices from doing this.

I also know a lot of guys that leave the car in neutral, while it's being towed. Not me!! I'm not that positive that the tie-downs won't break!!!
NONO Joel , i can come over there with my US irons...
Norbert,
Have you ever heard of Homeland Security? I don't think they allow the detainees to keep their corvette at Guantanamo Bay.
Joel,
The trailer is either 18 or 20 feet. I had trouble finding one that the fenders were low enough in order to open the door after you got on the trailer. I measureed today and I think I'm going to have atleast an inch clearence. If not, I'll drive in up on a 2X6. The spare tire is attached to the tool box on the front of the trailer and I think I'll have plenty of room on both the back and the front.
I'm not "neutral" on that subject Joel.....it's "park" for sure.
Jim, The company I work for has a contract to move all GM vehicles to Alaska, they supply us with a tie down manual for each model..We use nylon straps with various hooks? "R", "J" hooks. There are slots along the frame where these hooks go and then ratchet the strap tight. On the rear frame just inside the rear bumper you will find a slot on the outside of the frame. you can hook there and cross lash to the other side of the trailer.

I did the same on the front, I did not set the parking brake but left the vehicle in reverse. I then nailed chocks on each wheel, two to a wheel..You should be able to apply the same to your trailer..I got to run..See you in PF..Terry
