Topic: Trying To Sell a C-2 Corvette on eBay
in Forum: General Non-Vette Discussion
As I told you guys earlier, I sold my 66 corvette last fall. When my daughter was 6 years old, I was trying to get her interested in going to car shows with me so I had her a mini-vette built to match my car. I bought one of the midyear bodies at Carlise and had a friend build a custom frame to put it on. We added a 5hp engine, front and rear lights, radio with cassette player, gauges, carpet and a hydraulic brake system. In addition, we added the small "corvette stingray" emblems from a glovebox lid on the front and rear of the car and crossflags on each fender. A friend who runs a print shop made the chrome trim for the lights, license plate trim, front grill, side mouldings and stinger hood decal.
Now that I have a C3 and this car no longer matches mine, plus the fact that my daughter is now 17 years old and wants to sell "her" car, I thought I'd put it on eBay. The following is the "live chat" from eBay.
Your chat session has started..
Tiffany D.: Hello and welcome to eBay Motors Live Chat. My name is Tiffany. I'm sorry for the delay, how may I assist you today?
rearn2go67: Hi Tiffany, I have a speciality item i'd like to sell. It's a mini corvette that I had built when she was six years old. I would like to list it in Ebay motors but here's the problem....there's no Vin#, it has no doors and is a 1 cylinder.
Tiffany D.: No problem, I can help you out with this. May I please start off by verifying your user ID as rearn2go67?
rearn2go67: correct
Tiffany D.: Does the vehicle run?
rearn2go67: yes
Tiffany D.: I do apologize for the wait. I would like to let you know that I am still with you. It will take me a couple more minutes to look into this. Thank you for your patience.
rearn2go67: no problem
rearn2go67: I left out a couple of words in the description....meant to say that i had this car built for my daughter when she was 6 years old...lol
Tiffany D.: Ok, thank you.
Tiffany D.: In order to list a vehicle from on eBay Motors, the vehicle needs to have a VIN. Is this almost like a vehicle for a child to use'?
rearn2go67: exactly
rearn2go67: it was built for a child but is just like a small corvette...has a 5 horsepower engine, lights, radio with cassette player, carpet and hydrolic braking system
Tiffany D.: Ok, the best option then, would be for you to list this from in eBay.com and then in toys.
rearn2go67: don't think that would be appropiate....I had the car built to match my corvette and believe that it wouldn't get much exposure under "toys".
rearn2go67: of course i'm not familiar with eBay.com.....what's that?
Tiffany D.: I do see what you mean, but to be able to list a vehicle from in eBay Motors, it will need to have a VIN. eBay.com is the main eBay site, that has everything but vehicles listed in it.
rearn2go67: ok...thanks for your help, but i'll have to pass. I think the only way the car would sell is to be exposed to other corvette owners.
Tiffany D.: I do understand this, I would recommend eBay Motors, but the vehicle needs to have a VIN in order to be listed in Passenger Vehicles.
rearn2go67: Would it be possible to use the Vin # from my car and just explain this in the description?
Tiffany D.: No, because if a member decides to get a Vehicle History report done on the vehicle, then it will show that it is not the same vehicle and that may confuse the bidders.
rearn2go67: lol....do you mean to tell me that eBay members are THAT stupid?
Tiffany D.: No, the VIN has to belong to the vehicle that you are listing.
rearn2go67: alright then....thanks for your help anyways
Tiffany D.: Your best option would probably be in Toys, with the Motorized vehicles. I do apologize for any inconvenience that this may of caused for you.
rearn2go67: no problem...I understand
Tiffany D.: Is there anything else I may assist you with today?
rearn2go67: no thanks

Any suggestions?

I've been playing around on eBay all night. I think I have it figured out. The reason I wanted to get it on eBay Motors is, like myself, some father might figure it's a way of getting their son or daughter involved in some of "his" activities. I think my daughter drove the car in one Christmas parade and we might have taken it to 3 car shows. Even though she showed absolutely no interest in it, I can say that it drew more attention at a car show than mine did.
Thanks for all the advice. We'll see what happens. I know exactly what I have in this car. Now, you guys tell me what it's worth.
