I thought you were supposed to flush your brake fluid about every 2 or 3 years.  That stuff absorbs water.

thank you for the link to that article.  I had absolutely NO idea (which is why I should perhaps read the owners recommended service manual like Joel suggested....what a concept).  I will be more cognizant of these issues from now on. 
 
thank you to ALL who replied and gave me excellant advice. I am mechanically challanged (read that as DUMB-BELL)
