I just replaced the front brake pads and rotors on my 2002 Volvo S60.
I used Bendix brakes and Volvo rotors.  The right-front now has a squeal at around 20mph.  Is this normal? Will it go away? Did I do something wrong? Is there something I can do to stop it?

Thanks!

Turn the radio up...

You had to know that was coming, right?
Double-check to see if the dust-shield for that side is rubbing on the rotor. That's prolly the source of the skweel. Happens all the time after just about any front suspension work. Even if ya don't actually see where it's touching, it won't hurt to pry it away from the rotor a little.
Jacking it up and letting it idle in gear will help pin-point the location.

The pads could be making noise, but, in theory, they shouldn't be touching the rotors to start with. If the noise goes away when you lightly mash the bake pedal, then the pads may be the culprit, and you can just put a few more miles/stops on it and it should go away.
I'd still go with the dust shield rubbing.

I always get new rotors turned true, only becuase I've gotten "new" rotors there were warped right out of the box. I went through this on a Mitsu eclipse a few years back, the thing had some kind of weird harmonic noise coming from the rear brakes and it drove me bugeyed. I tried everything and I mean everything shimming, brake pad goo, new rotors, pads nothing worked and neither the dealership or myself could fix it. Eventually I just turned up the radioLOL

Now the wife is complaining that they "smell like they are burning".  This is normal, right?  ARG! Should have sucked it up and let the dealer do it, and get me for close to $500, huh?

Bruning, normal LOL? Are they abs? Could be they are not adjusted properly I haven't done any abs in forever and a day maybe a smart feller can explain that one. I'm also not a fan of the organic pads they are selling either. Your supposed to make about 20 slow speed stops during the break in period and then some back and forths with new rotors and pads. But since I've never even been close to a volvo I should probly stop talking.

They are ABS.  What needs adjusting? Should something be adjusted after putting the new rotors and pads on?

Like I said it's been a really really long time since I messed with abs like 10 years or so and I'm not a brake guy but I know their is a difference between them and old school disc brakes mainly in regulating brake pressure and what not. I reall wish I could help more! Hopefully someone who knows something will chime in.

You'll get a little smell out of new pads sometimes, depending on the composition of them. You've got new rotors and pads...if they continue to have a nasty smell, you may want to go to a different compound, or brand. Organics smell really bad(some have asbestos in them still)..semi-metallics are much better.
There should be no adjustments on the front or rear...the hydraulics will do that. If you have drum brakes on the rear, they will need some adjustments, but I doubt yer Vulvo has rear drums...

Did you figure out/fix the noise?

Like Joel said! I was looking at the only manual I have for a car with abs, its for a saturn sw LOL The only thing I saw about adjustments was the parking brake and the rear drum bakes but it also mentioned adjusting the brake light switch under the troubleshooting brakes section for dragging brakes, I have no idea how that would affect anything though. I was thinking that there was a trick for the speed sensors on some abs.

IF the brake light switch is adjusted too far forward(toward the pedal), it could cause the pedal to not release fully, which would create pressure in the brake system all the time. This would force the pads/shoes to "drag" a little. Most brake light switches are self-adjusting, tho, but some do have a threaded shaft with a nut for the adjustment, instead of a slip-fit/friction type retainer, that allows the switch to be pushed forward, and then the adjustment is made by pulling up fully on the pedal to"set" the switch in the proper location.
