Topic: Anyone good with computers?
in Forum: Humor
I figured you guys are so helpfull with vette stuff I might as well ask here about other stuff.
I am thinking about upgrading my computer and was wondering if anyone out there had opinions on it. I have a five year old gateway and was thinking of updraging the mother board, chip, and memory.
Anyone have any opinions?

Whatever you do get, Matt, make sure it has Spel-Chek!!

I bought this new HP in June of last year, and so far, the 'puter itself has been great. There has been a re-occuring problem with one of the DVD/CD/RW drives, but 90% of that is the intelligence of the dweebs working on it.

Good luck, and get the best one you can afford, even tho it will be obsolete by the time you get it home!

Have one built for you at a local shop.....I found that it is usually not much cheaper BUT support upgrades, etc is only a local phone call away to someone you know ..or a short drive over to the shop for a face to face discussion of the problems...

BTW: my supply of old 286 or 286 computers is like down to the two I have in my garages... DOS machines .... anyone got one in the closset
with less then 3 inches of dust on it... I need a couple of backups
Been recording all my CAR maintaince, oil changes repairs, notes for the last 25 years using C.A.R.S...an now very old DOS program... I can get it runing on "winders" computers but who needs "exotic" computers in the garage just for this infop...besides the old computers running DOS fire up and are running in 10 seconds...all my winders computers seem to take forever ...

Don't bother upgrading your present computer, its cheaper to get
a new one. You can't go wrong with a dell, or another gateway. best
buy and circuit city also have good prices, and a good selection
Tony's right, with the price of new desktops now a days its much cheaper to just buy a new puter. You can also get some great deals that include a printer and most new puters are also coming with flat screens

I build them for a living & might have some dos machines in the back..if not I can zap 2 & load dos if I can find it. When I get a chance I'll go look. You are correct aboout support..with Dell you're talking to someone in India reading a piece of paper who knows nothing about computers. A local shop can offer newer equipment & lots of support. Just try & find someone who shaves.

You will proibably not be able to upgrade your old computer..except for installing more memory..512M make old machines run great. Go to a local shop & tell them what you need & have them build a custom computer for you. What they will build is called a white box & they should use better compoments than Dell or Gateway because they guarantee it. I use Intel motherboards & processors, seagate drive & kingston memory ( this stuff costs more, but I have very few problems). People need support with these new computers..Big Bill G didn't make anything easier in fact they get more complicated each yr. Don't go to Windows 64 bit...not many printers, scanners etc can run on it XP Home or Pro is fine.
