Would I be better off switching to a semi-synthetic or full synthetic oil? I'm currently using a standard oil, although I've switched from 10-30/40 to 20-50 recently.I do have a small oil leak somewhere I havent found yet,if thats a factor. What are you guys using? By the way,I'm in NW Washington State, and we 'usually' dont get alot of freezing temps lower than the 30's,sometimes 20's.thanx

I really don't see the advantage of a synthetic blend...either go full synthetic or mineral based oil. If you have a leak, it could get worse with synthetic as synthetics clean better and open up any gaps in the seals, allowing a leak.

Whatever oil you decide on, even the lowest priced private label is better oil today than the best brand when our cars were originally built. To me, the secret is regular oil and filter changes whatever the oil. Long term, synthetic is superior.

If you've recently rebuilt your motor, I would go with synthetic. If your motor has never been rebuilt or opened up, I would stick with mineral based oil.

Thanks,I havent done any rebuilding yet, just performance add-ons.You've anwered another question I had, whether it was an "old wives tale" about synthetic making a leak worse than if staying with mineral-based,if thats the case. The other benefit I liked was storage issues, change intervals, wear benefits,& possible HP benefits. But I guess until I have a fresher engine,I'd better stay where I am,eh?

If you've got an engine that has always used Dino oil I would recommend sticking with it, or maybe going to a blend.

A newer engine I would go full synthetic.

And should one make the move toward synthetics, remember it is a one way journey. Once synthetic-ed you should never go back.

The metal actually becomes conditioned by the oil. One the engine is used to the synth, it may not carry the same lube qualities when switching back to Dino oil. It will, over time, adjust, but it does make an inital difference.

You can go back, but why would you want to reacclamate your engine metal to have a lesser lube? If I put synth in a fresh engine, I would stay with it.
