Having spent 7 years on active duty during the Viet Nam war I am forced to wonder...With the current state of the world, should we bring back the draft? |saluteflag|

Hey glenns! I didn't know that you are a veteran. Well, God Bless you brother. And thanks. You know that I have definitely have to reply to this post being in the military myself.(4 years active/13.5 years Nat.Guard)
I have to say no to the draft.
Why? Because if you force somebody to do something that they don't want to do, you will usually get a poor quality job. Also it takes more time and effort to get compliance out of a unwilling person. It detracts from our main objective. We don't have time for that. And thankfully we do have enough people to handle 2 wars at once. There is a lot of skilled people out there, that take a lot of pride in what they do. It's totally amazing!

P.S. glenns,if you want to e-mail me on military stuff, feel free, I could ramble on for hours. |biggrin|

Crikey, I typed this whole long message and it just went poof when I tried to post, apparently I used the square brackets, and when I went back to edit my post it was completely gone, how painful.
I think that personally I would rather get drafted. This is because I have very long very nice hair, and if I sign up, which I will, they'll make me cut it. However, if I am drafted into compulsory service they legally cannot force me to cut my hair, since women who volunteer to join the service are not forced to cut their hair. If I join up voluntarily I know the consequences of my actions and cannot complain that they are treating me differently than they treat female cadets(maybe you're not a cadet unless you go to one of the Acadamies, I don't know really).
I do agree with Sarge though, if the country forces people into the military the quality of service goes down substantially. This I don't know from experince, but my understanding of humanity is that unless we want to do something or there is a specific obvious benefit to doing it, we don't do it, and if we're forced to, we do it half-|cussing|. If our military starts going in with a bunch of half-|cussing| boys who would rather be flipping burgers at a McDonald's, Americans are going to die. When the media finds out that Americans are dead, the media goes into a frenzy and gets the peacenics who smoked too much crack in the 70's and now lobby for change and then the war gets forced over, much like I understand what happened in Vietnam. I know about the media frenzy bit from when Bush Sr. got a few of our soldiers killed helping bail out Kuwait.
Any old military/fire/police/national guard people who want to give me information about their time in service would be greatly appreciated, I'm considering all of those since I want to help my country but I love Architecture(what I'm studying in school) so I don't want to waste what I will have spent 5 years learning and absolutely enjoy anyway. Hrm, to clarify, I want to serve and do architecture, at the same time is preferable but I don't know if that is even possible, any feedback on your time in service would be greatly appreciated. Just send me an e-mail!
