I was a senior in HS when this happened. We stopped everything and went to the library and watched the coverage on TV. As a matter of fact I was in Spanish class and we were watching El Cid. When it got close to time for class to be over, we turned the movie off and me and another guy were playing with the TV to see if we could get The Price Is Right or something to come on. What we found was a very weak signal and it was of the Challenger coverage. We got our teacher to come watch with us. By then the whole class room was really paying attention. At the start of the next class is when the whole senior class went to the library and watched it on TV.

I was working for Lockheed Missiles and Space at the time. I remember I was up in a first stage solid propellant rocket motor installing a baffle when the announcement came over the PA for all employees to suspend work and come to the employee lounge.
We had a television tuned to the launch. I crawled out of the nozzle and got to the lounge just in time to see the catastophic explosion. Of course we all knew immediately that all of the souls on-board would be lost. There was know emergency egress for a free falling forward module.

Commander Dick Scobee was a regular here in Charleston. His family had a home here. Dr. Ron Mcnair was also a fellow South Carolinian. He was from very humble means growing up in the tobacco country of Lake City, SC. He was a man of many great accomplishments. He earned a docorate in Physics from M.I.T. He was an accomplished saxophone player and a blackbelt in karate. He was an impressive figure to young children growing up in this rural region.

I remember them on this day not for their tragic demise but for there spirit and desire to continue the exploration. We truly are just a small rock in this expansive galaxy. These seven great explorers gave the ultimate sacrifice to gain further knowledge of our planet. I hope they continue to inspire the young people coming up today.

Take a minute today to remember them, give thanks for their selfless efforts, and remember the love ones they left here on Earth.

Hard to believe it has been twenty years already.
I remember watching the tragedy on TV, but I don't remember where I was at the time.

But if it was a weekday during the day, I would have been at work and probably didn't see it until I got home and watched the 6:00 news.

Let's hope the new program does a better job of protecting the crew.

I was in 8th grade math class. The typing teacher came barging in to tell us about the tragedy. We watched TV for the rest of the day. Somewhere I have a VHS tape of the live footage I recorded. I remember the news people contemplating if they could've survived and be rescued. Even at 15, I couldn't believe the lack of common sense in the media. They were heroes.
