I was wondering if anyone knows a way to change the mileage on a speedometer. I have a VW and I am getting a replacement speedo. I currently have 126,700 and the replacement has 79,000. I figured if I hooked a drill up to it but it would take about 50 hours. I could do it faster with a dremel, but I am afraid this would damage the speedo. I am afraid of cracking it open and not being able to put it back together.

I think a speedometer rebuilder can do it, but the odometer probably has to be disassembled. I've heard that C3 odometers have a reputation for fragility in that regard. I'm not sure of the legality of it though, though that may require the intent to turn the miles back for fraudulant purposes. It may be OK for restoration, but I'm not sure of that.

Look on the 'net for speedometer rebuilders/restorers. I had one done for a '50 Ford truck in Greeneville SC. They did a great job and I remember them asking me how many miles I wanted on it. Can't remember the name of the place.

thanks for the number. I already got the milage advanced to the original number. It is off though by about 5 miles per hour. I called them and they told me there was not much they could do for me. I guess I just got to remember that I am going alittle slower that it says. Thanks though, it would have been great because they are only 25 miles from here.

Slightly illegal in PA. Might want to consider replacing your speedo and all you have to do it check the "Not actual miles" on the title if you sell it

Why would it be a problem if you match it to the mileage of the one you take out. Then eveything would be ok. I could see if you turned it back, But I advanced it to the true mileage of the old one. There are a bunch of places in pa that when you buy a new one they will turn the odometer to your current mileage.

If you are off the 5 mph don't you need a new speedo gear in the transmission? Mine has the needle correct and the odomoter is about 10% fast. I am going to get it rebuilt this winter.

no, the speedo gear wouldn't have to change. the speedo spring is not adjusted right, and i'll bet the odometer is right on. joe

Yep, As far as I know the odometer is correct. I do believe it is the spring.
