Havent heard of that..is it only in the Great White North? How much does it cost to get an appraisal if the insurance guys dont come out & do it? I think the real name of that RamJam song was "Black Betty"

Now that I think about it you may be right. I keep thinking of ZZ Top with Black betty...is that politically correct?.
Silver Wheels is what some companies call their collector car ins. I had to get the 442 done as well since it's been 5 years. The appraisal for both cars cost me $225 CAD and like I said that's good for five years. The $16,000 is actually "replacement value" not resale value.
Once the appraiser does the job, he then checks recent sales of similar cars using Hemmings, Old Cars and the internet. Then you get two copies for each car of his 10-12 page write up with pictures. You give one copy to the ins. agent.
The insurance co. here insure the cars for the appraisal value. There are restrictions however. The car can't be your daily driver, and you must have at least 10 years driving experience. If you have no claims you get a 5% discount every year upto 3 years.
I think Haggarty's offers a similar policy in the US. There are probably more companies but I don't know of them. Your car may be worth more than you think. An appraisal is also a good sell tool. Most people think that if a car is appraised at $10,000 its selling price should be $10,000. If you ask $9,000, the buyer assumes he's getting a $1,000 off.
