I purchased a Sony DVD drive over ebay.  It came with no box, no instructions, no software, no wire.  How do I install it?  Just unplug my old CD drive and plug in the new one?  Is any software needed?  Thanks, steve

First of all Steve. What operating system are you using? Is it an internal or external drive? if its internal you need to remove your computer case, remove you old player from the slot, and screw in new one. The cable going to it should be the same, so you just plug it in. When you start up the PC Windows should find it and say new hardware installed. It should locate the software to run it from there. Now I'm not a PC wiz, but I have installed my own hardware. If you have trouble, I'm sure there's a geek here to help ya.

Thanks Terry.Thumbs%20Up  Its an internal drive and I have Windows.  I was hoping it would be that simple, as you describe.  This will be the first time that I have ever opened a computer, so it will also give me a chance to clean the inside of dust and see what it looks inside.

You may need the software for the DVD to work. You can sometimes download it, depending on what type/brand it is. We have three puters here at the shop, all have DVD players in them, but NONE of them will actually play a DVD! The software is not there. They will play CDs, or even video from a CD, but they do not recognize the DVD format.
Just something to think aboot...

Joel's right, you may need the software disk, or get it from the manufacturer web site. I use Nero Express, because I like it. You may borrow it if you like.

Thanks Terry,  for offering to lone me the software.  I assume it is on CD.  And I assume, I install it before I install the DVD.  Sounds like I may be getting over my head and I may end up chickening out.  But I really appreciate your offer, steve

What issue of Windows do you have. Windows  Vista I believe will have the software already installed for you to play DVD's. If it is a DVD burner then you will need software for that. Contact the seller and ask for the software if you need it. Most computer guys do not include it with the hardware but can get it for you, and it should be free, if you need it. The software needs to be matched to the hardware. One nice thing about buying from chain stores is that it always comes with software.
I have built/updated a lot of computers. I use to fight this all the time when I was working with older versions of Windows. XP came with CD burner software so no software was needed. I am pretty sure that is the case of Vista and DVD software. I ahve yet to do the DVD install on one yet. I did have to install DVD burner software for my computer but I am using XP. I don't see any reason to install Vista yet. All the new computers I have come across already came with DVD's.
