Hunters choosing President carefully?
Thursday, October 28, 2004
With the election just around the corner, sportsmen should be careful to vote for the candidate, be it local or national, that will side with them on hunting and fishing issues.

Just because a candidate dresses in hunting attire or shows off a gun in public doesn't mean that he will side with the hunter when he gets into office.

A great example of this is the time when Sen. John Kerry held up a Remington 11-87 semi-automatic shotgun to those attending a rally and thanked them for this gift. This is the same gun that a bill he sponsored (S-1431) would ban for being a "semi-automatic shotgun that has a pistol grip."

It would be interesting to see just how many times Kerry had been hunting in the years prior to being a candidate for president and just how many hunting licenses he had purchased in the last few years.

In addition, Kerry has been described by the National Rifle Association (NRA) as the "Most Anti-Gun Candidate in U.S. History." Consider too that the following anti- hunting organizations are 100 percent for Kerry; The Humane Society, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence, the Fund For Animals, Americans For Gun safety and the Sierra Club.

In fact, according to the NRA, Kerry's actual voting record is more anti-gun than that of Al Gore. The list of anti-gun votes that Kerry has voted for while in the Senate are too numerous to mention.

If we, as gun owners and hunters, are hoping to keep our Second Amendments alive it would behoove us to consider the candidates gun stance when entering the polling booth next Tuesday.

Many times these "public" meetings are due to the law making them necessary or as a means to make the public feel that their input is really being considered, when in reality those making the decisions would just as not have anyone else seeing what is happening.

A few years ago, the line on the Maurice River above which anglers needed a fishing license, was the Route 49 Bridge in Millville. The powers-to-be in Trenton decided to extend it well down the river to the spot where it is currently located.

To do so it was necessary to have a "Public meeting" on the subject. Those of us in the news media received a notice of the meeting so that we could alert the fishermen -- only the notice arrived in our mailbox two days after the meeting was held.

Last Friday, we received an E-mail concerning an important meeting on Summer Flounder, Black Sea Bass and Scup. This meeting was held Tuesday at the Division's Nacote Creek Law Enforcement Office in Port Republic. Among the subjects to be determined were the allocation of the summer flounder catch between the commercial and recreational sectors. It was revealed that at that time the United Boatmen's and Recreational Fishing Alliance's petition for a 50-percent share of the total allowable landings of summer flounder be given to the recreational sector would be denied.

We received this announcement too late to be in last week's column or on our radio broadcast over WSNJ-AM. Could it be that those holding the meeting did not want anyone rocking the boat on these issues? The Division has deleted all workshop meetings between the outdoor media and the Division, a time when we could get valuable information concerning the plans of the Division and actually ask some questions of the heads of the various departments. This deletion has come about ever since Bradley Campbell headed up the DEP, which is the organization over the Division of Fish and Wildlife.

My intent was not to stir a pot,but show Kerry for who he is....obviously most people saw it--> Bush won by 3.6 million votes! The largest popular vote in history! The only President to win by the 2nd largest majority vote was 12 years ago...Bush,Sr.! At least Kerry has the class Gore didnt by not dragging us thru another 2 weeks of recounts & litigation. Now we have to pick up,move on,get back to work,& fix a country so divided.Republicans have more of a majority in the House & Senate to work with, but must work with everyone to get it done right. |saluteflag|

on general principle..

what is the point on posting crap about a race thats already decided...

when I look at the forums active in the last twenty four hours and there are quite a few politically motivated messages it seems like beating a dead horse..

a few weeks ago when theyre may have been undecided voters it was one thing...

now its just annoying.

Ahh, but it's not official

We Ohioans are a stubborn lot!

I know it won't make a difference, so what's wrong with our system? Are they streaching it out on purpose? Why? You just gotta love politicans, those rascals!

Of courese chads are not our issue. We sent Chad to Florida. |laugh|
