Owned and completely restored it while attending auto body school, and I mean complete (body, interior, headliner, suspension, engine, electrical, bumpers, and drive train).
kept everything stock it was a 4 speed-extremely fun car (1968) it had lots of potential for getting me in trouble. Easy car to work on, it had quick steering and cornered like it was on rails which leads to excessive speeding on winding country roads kinda makes you want too drive like the bad dud in the mustang in the movie "ROAD HOUSE"
The car was a joy to drive (after you got in- it is lower and harder to get in and out of than my vet) but not for a person who has any of the stifness of old age

I worked at a VW dealer in 75. And I owned a 71 Karmann Ghia. Those little critters are a lot of fun to drive. I agree that they corner like stink! Not real fast so speed is not their thing.
They are know as one of the type 1 VW chassis. The Beetle is also a type 1, and so is the "Thing". You can actually swap the bodies between these three.
The only difference between the Ghia and the Bug is the body, and the first gear ratio and suspension rates. The Ghia first gear is a bit steeper to give it a better launch. The other ratios are the same. The Ghia is also faster, has a greater top end, and handles better due to it's lighter weight and better aerodynamics.
Very fun car, but they RUSTED BAD!!! Watch closely for patch and repair work.
And don't worry, it won't beat the Vette.
Have fun,
Scott

I had a 1974 Super bug made into a flad bed truck. I called it my 1/4th ton pickup!
I told my wife she needed a 2006 Monte Carlo with 303 H.P.
Boy, she sure looks good in it!!!!
