I can't vouch for the accuracy of the following -- maybe someone else can -- but put a perspective on the following:

At about the time our original 13 states adopted their new constitution in 1787, a Scottish history professor by the name of Professor Alexander Tyler had this to say about “The Fall of the Athenian Republic” over 2,000 years previous to that date.
..................................................
The Fall of the Athenian Republic.

“A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse (generous gifts) from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury, with the result that a democracy always collapses over loose fiscal policy, (which is) always followed by a dictatorship.” “The average age of the world’s greatest civilizations has been two hundred years. These nations have progressed through this sequence. From bondage to spiritual faith; from spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty; from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency; from complacency to apathy, from apathy to dependence, from dependence back into bondage.”

To quote a previous poster ... do you see a trend here?

The US is not a democracy, it is a republic. Majority does not necessarily rule...the electorial college does.

History shows that all great governments are temporary. The Roman Empire declined and then failed when a few corrupt rulers began to disregard the senate and the "rules" and took matter into their own hands. I believe it was Servius who broke the neptual rule and appointed his whacko son Comodus to succed him. Downhill from there. Athens was no different. They wacked Socrates because he was pointing out their corruption and hipocrasy. The Turks had there day, China, Europe had theirs, taking turns being King of the Hill, the USSR...now this is a trend to be concerned with.

I believe, I could be wrong though, that technically a democracy is majority rule and a republic is representation for the people based on something other than majority, like population and senate seats etc.

A true democracy is majority rule with no provision for minority rights. We have a Representative Republic.

An example is two wolves and a sheep take a vote over what is for dinner...a democracy with a Second Amendment is the sheep contesting the results.

The Second Amendment...the original Department of Homeland Security!

REPUBLIC- (Lat. res publica,=public affair),- today understood to be a sovereign state ruled by representatives of a widely inclusive electorate. The term republic formerly denoted a form of government....... DEMOCRACY- (Gr.,=rule of the people), -term originating in ancient Greece to designate a government where the people share in directing the activities of the state, as distinct from governments controlled. |idea|

Hey... check this out. While were talking about the second Amendment.... There is some stupid Muslim, Anti - American group, and their leader is the check this out: The "Anti-Christ" and he says that he plans to lead his troops on the dark side of the Armageddon, and one third of the world’s population will die. When will these Muslims grow up, and realize that you can't just kill people in the name of Allah, because we are free, and don't follow in their religion? Not to mention there are two types of Muslim religions: 1) The first kind think that everyone that is not Muslim is an infidel, and must be killed in the name of Allah. 2) All white people are the devil, and should all be killed. Holey crap.... Seriously I'm tired of nonsense. I've seen like 2 videos on the internet which I will not post; but they include a homemade bomb by some Muslims that was planted on a roadside, and then an American tank rolled over it and blew up, and then they screamed in the name of Allah like 400 times like a-holes. Then the other one was 4 Muslims used an RPG to take down an American Blackhawk, and then once again like a-holes scream in the name of Allah. A moment of silence...... |sad|
