Hey guys,

I need a little bit of advice from some older people (no offense) other than my parents. But what I mean is advice from people that have already experienced my age.  As you all know I work at Kmart store number 9819 in Henderson, Nevada. Everything started out going great. They hired this new supervisor from the MESWEAR dpt. I'm kind of po'd b/c she was a lead floor manager for a department she doesn't really have register training that extensive. Cashiers such as me do it all day long. What I'm po'd about is that since some overnight cashiers quite they basically overnight turned my schedule to like: 5PM-12AM 6PM-12AM 5PM-1AM, and 6PM-1AM all week long except the Wednesday, and Thursday I have off for school. And it happens every week, they are not rotating the schedules like they should. This is too much for one kid to do, and go to school. There are other kids still in HS that could do it, if I can they can. Since I complained they changed my scheduling, so far this is only week one, I can't wait to see what happens next week. Anyhow Saturdays, and Sundays they still have me on from 5PM-12AM, I'm really pissed because it’s till the weekend. They treat me really unfair over there. They are making me force people to buy March of dime shoes for $1 I know it seems stupid but I have to force the people into doing it, or I have to buy them myself really. I have to meet a 5 an hour quota or I get like 10 visits from my 5 super visors, and 5 managers, it’s seriously like office space the movie. This new supervisor turned up the radio on a phone on register 7, and had 2 girl cahiers dancing with her in front of the register, and they were all laughing and crap. I had like a 10 person line. By the time I got done with my line, she said to the other cashiers to get back on their registers and lower the radio (a bit too late there ms. supervisor Karen the retard). I don't want to seem like a big boy, big wig but I deserved that position over her. She is already a floor lead manager of a department, and doesn't do a register all day. Plus they moved up a few cashiers to supervisor after a short period of time, and they hired a supervisor with no retail, or management experience. Since I started doing the 'overnight' shifts, the manager, and the supervisor basically give me the supervisor phone, and keys. So basically I am supervisor at night. Of course they do the paperwork and till making, but I have helped, and sometimes even done the paperwork, and till making process. I have used a lot of features for the label, and sign maker. I have taken on a lot of training for floor departments, and supervisor activities. And still the HR manager shrugs me off like I’m a POS replicable peasant (and yes, I have brought all this to her attention, and her doesn’t care), even when I complain about the supervisors treating me unfair. I get dumped on b/c I'm the only guy cashier. They are paying me $7.75/hr. All the new cashiers still have no idea what to do (they have been there 2 months ALMOST, and by 2 months I knew just about everything to do with the cash register and the common PLU codes that you have to memorize for produce, hell I know just about all of them now.); I've been there over 7 months already so they ask me what to do all the time. They also come over and talk crap about me to my customers to try and make me look bad. But a lot of the cashiers left b/c its all B/S over there. The other dude chaser went over to this place:

http://www.sheridansfrozencustard.com/ right across the street in the same parking lot. They start at $7/hr, and after 3 months you can get as much as $8/hr. The guy Charles said it’s noting, its easy over there, and there isn’t any stress like at Kmart. The owner told me to put my 2 weeks in and come over there. I don't know if will work out all that good, and I might get fired from there. But I'm tired of putting up with Kmart's b/s, what should I do?

Thanks guys,

-Louis

(P.S. yes the Custard is extremely good, and I don't mean to bring my rants to the forums, but I am a bit confused. And Kmart is my first REAL job experience aside from the little internet thing I had going on back in 2001-2003)

Hey Louis,  OK here is my 2cnts:  try to sit and think about you what you really might like to persue. If it is retail or becoming the manager of that K-mart then stay where you are.  If it is some thing else: Cars, Landscape design, culinary, architecture... Then go hang around those people those places.  Listen it is better to catch crap and make a paupers wage from people that can teach you the true practical knowledge of the field that you can see persuing than from somthing that is a complete waste of time. This is the theroy behind interning. Start now,  because you will turn around and you will be thirty something and have wasted a whole sh** load of time.

This is the land of opportunity build a better mouse trap or pick the brain of someone who has until you can. you will fulfill yourself, you will be using your time wisely.  It may seem like a hard road but good luck seems to follow those who work real hard.  GOD can move mountains but believe me Jack you better bring a shovel

Dont concern yourself with spending money on the fast cars now.  That will come in time. It will be a nice reward. most of us have put alot of time focusing on other life stuff for many years before we started with these kind of hobbies.

Only you can answer some of the things I mentioned You will figure it out but DON'T BE AFRAID try anything. you will learn more from trying and failing Than suceeding on the comfortable path.

I agree with Tunnelback - and would add that for now your focus must be on your education. Find a less stressful job and enjoy your time in school. Believe me -it's over very quickly and you can't get the time back. You have many years ahead of you to buy those go fast cars and parts.

amen to that! these guys are wise beyond their years! i have to agree- your education is the first priority! believe me, before you know it youll be 35, and you will look back at the choices you have made. at this point of your life, a job should only help you to save for the things that matter- school, gas money whatever. Those guys are right- if you have an interest in something, try to find a job being around it. for example, ive always had an interest in aviation, but my full tiime gig is being a graphic artist, but it doesnt pay as much as id like it to. for some extra $$ i decided to look for a job on the weekends, and wandered into the local airport and found a job refueling aircraft, washing, polishing and helping the mechanics whenever possible. i spent alot of time with pilots, instructors, mechanics, and of course being around cessnas all day. it busted my hump, but man did i learn alot! i even learned to fly from that experience. Dont let that crap get you down, and keep your mind open. you never know!

Wise words from all above, I being a young guy myself, I can suggest a summer job I did during high school and it really sparked my interest in cars and machines. It was a "Lube Technician" or oil changer at a quick lube. It payed 7.00 hour at start and I left at 8.50 after three summer and winter breaks. During that time I learned a lot about cars and I wasnt treated badly as long as I got cars done fast enough. Plus I got to see under the hoods of over 40 cars a day. I enjoyed that job.

You're getting some excellent advice. Without an education, or at the very minimum complete a trade school. You will be limiting yourself to work for lower wages and less desireable employers. If I recall, you're under 20 years old, you have the whole world in front of you, be patient, become good at what you like, keep your word, and worry less about others. Most important, no matter what you decide to do, always give it 100%.

To be noticed you must stand above the rest. To stand above, you must be better prepared than the rest. if you drag your feet, you will be over 30 and still manning the register. Your toys will come later, and you'll enjoy them just the same.

Well, I find all this to be true..... And I will take all of this advise. I am going to put my 2 weeks in. Kmart is just to retarted to know when they have or had a good employee. Just to straighten this out. I had a supervisor DEMOTE HERSELF (yes, thats right she applied for a department) to TOYS as stock, not even lead floor manager for toys. Because she said that the girls were the worst cahsier crew for the front-end shes ever had, and shes been there for 3 years. SO, I guess that menas with the exception of CHarles and I, all the other cashiers suck..... But I guess Brenda the HR manager doesn't see that.
