Hang in there mate, I've just got back from a heart scare with my wife so I know what you are going through.  Life is like that and has many happy and sad times.  Only the human beings get through these times with humility and grace.
 
I reckon you are one of those people.  Your mates in Australia are with you and keep your chin up.  I hope your mum doesn't suffer too much and the final outcome is good no matter what direction it takes.
