With winter coming on, I was wondering who still burns wood to heat your house or shop?  What do you burn?  How many cords?  How much $ ?.  What kind of stove do you have?

I only burn in the fireplace, (get my own off building lots) but dry seasoned hardwood (mostly oak) is 175 to 200+  a cord in the fall. them outdoor furnaces that burn almost any kind of wood are looking to be the next big thing out in the country. 

used to use a stove many years ago when i had electric heat. only used hardwood as ron said pine etc you had to clean the chimney too much. mine was a combination wood/coal stove. started using coal and for me it was great. would heat the whole house with it and electric heat went off at breakers. only had to mess with the stove usually twice a day sometimes three. the only thing with coal was that it had to be cold all the time as once you built the fire you would not let it burn out and if it got really warm out the house would get super hot. a ton of coal would last about six weeks and my house would be at least 70-75 degrees.

I burn whatever trees have fallen around the house! Every now and then, I'll go and cut wood from construction sites before they clean it up. Lots of Mesquite , pine, and cedar around here. All burns the same to me...my fireplace ain't picky.

Well it's not exactly chunks of wood I burn, but it is wood in a pellet form I burn. I use a pellet stove to assist in heating the old house. I burn about 4 ton of pellets a season. 50-40 lb bags per ton.  I burn at a rate of 1 to 2 bags per day depending on the temp.

Well here in the pacific northwest, we have a lot of firewood. This last spring we cut down all of the trees around the house, did this for a few reasons, 1- hated raking up the leaves, moss on the roof, and 2 reason is trying to make the house as low maintenance as possible for Lacey.  Anyway we cut down 4 birch trees, 6 large alder, and a huge pine tree.  Figure we kept around 6 or 8 cords, figure that is around 48-64 RICKS,  burn in a LOPI wood fireplace insert, electric fan blower, ceiling fans in living room, dining room.  main furnace is forced air with a heat pump.  I usually make the fires to hot for the wife.  mainly have it for back up heat incase power outage to kept Lacey warm.  Average price for a cord (4X4X8) is split, dried, delivered about 100.00-150.00.

Here in OKC we burn in ricks (1/3 of a cord).  $45 - $75 depending on what type and if picked up or delivered.

1 - 3 ricks or a cord would usually do for a year here.  Here, ricks are 2X4X8.
