Up until 2 years ago, for the first 23 years of my marriage, space heaters and wood was the only heat we had (yes there are times you need heat in So Cal) LOL
What i did when i needed wood was to grab a good book, sit down by the entrance to the local dump, and waited for someone who had a load of wood they were dumping (old 2x4s, ect).  Had them deliver it to my house, save the dump fees.  All those years I never once paid for wood.  I guess I am the cheap one of the bunch.

In N. Cal. (in the Sierra foothills) we are surrounded by oak and pine. The house I found that I could afford 20 +  yrs. ago was all elec. So...I installed a wood stove (airtight) and the rest is history. I turned off the breakers and heated the house with wood only ever since. Avg. 1 cord a winter (small house). A cord of oak (the best you can burn) goes for $250. to $300. delivered. I've become a saw mechanic since and have my own business on the side, thats what afforded me the vettes Thumbs%20Up Clap.
