Just got my power and phone restored after Thursday night's visit from Katrina. I missed everyone...two whole days without a forum visit. For all of you in it's path (looks like Louisiana now), take tomorrow to prepare to the highest level of preparedness. Don't make my mistake of proverbially being caught with my pants down....I'm ashamed to say this, living down here in a hurricane-prone area to have been caught so off-guard. The Weather Service called this a minimal storm (category 1)...but it's stiil a hurricane and it sure packed a wallop. It's now churning in the warm Gulf waters gaining strength. Sorry to sound so melodramatic, but it's real easy to say, "Ah, we'll be ok....it'll veer off. Be safe!

I was watching The Weather Channel this morning and they are comparing it to Camille back in 1969. This is going to be a bad one. Hopefully everyone in N.O. away is getting way away. Stay safe guys.

Glad to hear you made it through ok JR.

I had my eye-opener last year with Charlie.  No damage, but scared the hell out of me; just enough to build (renew) respect for mother nature and I now prepare 2-3 evacuation plan instead of only 1.

Like you said, never EVER downplay the possible force of a hurricane.  It is way more that winds; it is flooding and objects flying around, down power lines, trees falling in every direction... even for a CAT 1.

I was in the bayou's about 3 weeks ago, and the guide (who has been living on the bayou himself all his life) was telling us about the man-made redirection of the Mississipi (which could retake his natural course if the water goes way over the levees..) and the levees had made New Orleans a town with a deadline of about 100 years.  Most of the bayou's might be gone in a few days and all I can think of right now, is this nice person who wouldn't want to live anywhere else and almost had a tear in his eye just thinking that New Orleans is sinking.

This hurricane might accelerate the almost inevitable dissaperance of New Orleans.  I hope him and his family make it allright!

JRedding, I bet this is the last time it will happen to you.  It's always the same; the residents have the feeling that the medias are over-amplifying it (which they do a little...), and it is very slow coming, but once it's there, everything happen real fast (especially flooding) and it's just too late.

I know I won't risk it again.

Thanks for the kind words, everyone....You have to feel for the folks in N.O. now.

Stephane, the sad part is I've lived down here 43 years. The shutters should have gone up the minute I knew it was approaching. Surveying the aftermath, I discovered a sizable piece of concrete roof tile from the neighbor's roof inches away from hitting a window I thought would never be hit by debris....one never knows.

Prayer is just about the only thing left for New Orleans.
