Vette(s): 1978 INDY PACE CAR #3016 of #6502 built. Has original Pace car decals still in GM boxes the way it was delivered to GM dealers. per NCRS "UPDATE" Decals applied as of 3/8/02 (ALL ORIGINAL)
Yesterday morning I did what I always do, turned on my computer to get ready to view C3VR and to my surprise my computer had crashed. It was locked in safe mode, no Icons and the keyboard would not work, basically locked up. I called a friend who is a computer programer for a local business and I asked him what he thought it was. He said there was a bad virus spreading through E-mails and stealing the I.Ds from wedsite contacts. He had the software to put in the computer to see if the virus was there.
After we got the computer back up and the new up to date virus protection installed sure enough there was a virus W32. Magistr.39921@mm virus. is the name of the virus. When this gets in your computer it will lie dormant for about a month before gradually destroying your files. One of the symptons are when you take your mouse on your desktop and go to click on a Icon it will move away.
The lesson learned here is don't be fooled into a false sense of security with a virus protection system that is out of date considering how many hackers and new viruses there are today.

Thanks Doug. That is why I have Norton Antivirus which automatically updates itself once a week. Can never be too careful |biggrin|

Norton is what I updated to. From what I understand it is a pretty smart application. When it does it's update daily or whenever, it goes out and finds viruses then it creates a dictionary of current viruses that are up to date and compares them to what is in your computer if there are any. And then it has the capability to repair the files if they are not damaged beyond recognition.

A friend of mine also go whacked with an email virus recently.

I can personally recommend Norton Anti-Virus. I just downloaded it from Amazon about a month ago and it has caught many incoming viruses!

You can download it from Amazon and have it immediately available for install.
Norton Anti-Virus 2002 (Download)- Only $44.99, and you can also get a $20 rebate if you are upgrading from a previous version, or competitor product.

You can order it on CD-ROM too.
Norton Anti-Virus 2002 (CD-ROM) - Only $49.99, and you can get a $20 rebate from Norton (same deal as above) and if you order before the end of 4/25, you get a $15 rebate from Amazon.

Anyway, if you don't have any anti-virus at all... GET ONE!

I have to agree with Adams advice ,I also run the norton antivirus ! Take a look at the eventlog after about a week and you will understand . There are very few days that pass that you donot get a system warning . A really great investment .

For those of you who don't have an anti-virus program already or are thinking of changing what you have......COMPUSA is selling Norton System Works 2002 for $99.99. It comes with $70.00 worth of rebates so the final cost is $19.99. Ya can't beat the price or the protection especially when you consider you will get Norton Utilities, Clean Sweep, anti virus and a few other applications included.

My 2001 Norton Anti Virus update subscription ran out two weeks ago. Before I could do anything about it I got the W32.klez.gens virus. It was a pain. I went and bought Norton 2002 for $40, reformatted my computer, and now all is good.

I've gotten, no joke, about 100 emails with W32.klez.gens virus in it.
Fortunately (I guess) there were sent to my C3VR account which I retreive over the web, so they don't have a chance to hack away at my computer.

In fact, as I am typing this, I just check my in-box, and there are 3 more waiting for me.

It's more of a pain in the ass right now, then effecting my pc.

Yinz guys can heckle me all you want 'cause I have a Mac, but....

$$$ spent on buying anti-virus software: 0
$$$ spent on montlhy upgrades to anti-virus software: 0
Number of minutes/hours/days of down-time due to viruses: 0
Number of times my Mac crashed due to viruses: 0
Amount of time spent installing/upgrading anti-virus software: 0
Number of years surfing the web: 5
Number of known Mac viruses: 60
Number of known Windows viruses: 100's and increasing every year

That's not to say the Mac never gets infected, it does, but worrying about a virus
infection is something a normal Mac users spends little time on. |grin|
