I have sold many cars, trucks, few boats in my time. Would appreciate anyone's thought on this.
When we sell a vehicle to an individual, and that person goes down the road, kills himself or someone else in the car he bought from you, or causes property damage, can that person say that he or she just bought the car, and it had something wrong with it, causing the accident?

Every time I have made a selling transaction, I take the buyer to the DMV to make the title transfer application, and I am not responsible for an accident, being that the vehicle is no longer in my name.
What is our liability over a mechanical issue causing an accident, if the buyer made that claim? Do we have them sign an "As Is" document?
Next time I sell, I am going to make the buyer sign something to release me from any accident mishaps, etc.
Any thoughts on this?

I always use an "as is where is" bill of sale.

In Ohio, all vehicle transactions between private parties are automatically "As Is". Unless the buyer can prove the seller did not reveal a know safety problem. But that is almost impossible to prove.
