Hey Norm, all of the major mfgs. have deals right now. You should be able to pick up a notebook with lots of whistles and bells for $1800. I have a compaq at work and a Dell at home. My preference is the Dell. More bang for the buck. There are pros and cons to every brand, but when I bought mine, I referred to Consumer Reports for the info and am happy with what I bought. I believe Dell is still #1 in support and product reliability, but you may want to check the current numbers. The last I looked notebooks were available for under $1000.00. Good Luck.

You should have no problem finding a Pentium IV with a DVD-RW drive for that price. What you WILL have trouble finding is the 17" screen. You'll probably have to settle for a 15" screen.
I was just on Dell.com and they seem to have a few choice that will fit your budget.
Let us know what you wind up getting!
Good luck.
