Recently the Navy sank the old aircraft carrier USS Oriskany off the Gulf Coast of Florida to become an artificial reef. Here's a bunch of photos. As I said...neat stuff even if not car related.

A related part of this story: the Oriskany was the carrier that Senator John
McCain took off from when he went out on his fateful flight over North
Vietnam as a Navy fighter pilot--and was shot down by a surface-to-air
missile (a Soviet SAM, I believe). I saw him interviewed while he watched
video footage of the ship slowly slipping beneath the waves...typically, he
took the long view of the event, but still you could see that he was moved
by the moment.

You always hate to see an "old warrior" put down. At least this way, she will "continue to serve" - just in a different way. Awesome pictures. Thanks,

The buddy of mine who forwarded me the link is in charge of the artificial reef program for Virginia, so he's very interested in this stuff. He sank a number of old Liberty ships off the coast of Virginia to make artificial reefs and it's been a very successful program. He's overseen things like dumping old military vehicles and even old tires offshore. He has a few neat stories about it and the things that happen.

A few years ago the decommissioned Navy amphibious attack ship Spiegel Grove was sunk off Florida. My buddy was used as a consultant in that and after he inspected the ship he told them it was inappropriate for their use as the ship's design made it far too difficult to predict how it would sink. He was right...it sank far too fast and ended up cockeyed on the sea bottom and too close to the surface. It took one of the hurricanes last year to move the sea bed around and that actually set the Spiegel Grove in the position they originally wanted.

Neat stuff. Glad everyone like it.
