To swell the ranks of immigration rights protests in Washington, DC and demonstrate a strong showing for news cameras, a Maryland public school district offered graduation credit to students who "voluntarily" attended marches on the National Mall.  Maryland students are required to put in 60 hours of community service to graduate from high school, which usually includes cleaning up local parks, volunteering at senior centers or tutoring disadvantaged students.  But Montgomery County school officials used a loophole in the law and allowed students to work for CASA of Maryland Inc., which offers services to legal and illegal immigrants, but also organized the Washington, DC immigration rights protest.  Instead of improving the community, students were encouraged to hang out at the large grassy area in front of the Capitol building and listen to a free concert.  School officials shouldn't forget their primary mission: education, not political advocacy.
