Dammit!!!!!! I just shelled out the 200 clams for the Lifetime membership, and now my friggin 'puter's gonna take a dump on me!
Jest my dadgum luck. Anyway, if any of youse 'puter can help, here's whats habbinin. It's slower than christmas to start with, but it's always been like that. The NEW problem is, if I shut it down, it don wanna boot back up. I have to re-boot about 10 times before it will go beyond a blank screen. It ran a "scandisc" on itself, and that took almost a full hour, and it's NEVER done that. Also, it has DELETED my McAffee virus program. I'm so p**sed. The 12ga. shotgun is callin, and I'm tired of this turd 'puter laughin at me. Someone stop me before I kill it!!

I don't know anything about these darn things, BUT when mime starting acting up....running slow and so on, it turned out I had picked up a virus. Had to wipe out everything and start all over again.
Good luck

Vette(s): 1975 C3 Red, T-Tops, Black Interior. All I need is time and money! Getting there!

If you can get there, download these programs and run them.  They are among the best, and they are free.

www.grisoft.com  antivirus personal

Spybot Search and Destroy  v 1.3

Adaware Personal v 1.5

Spyware Blaster.

These are recommended by my local computer guru, and seen to do a good job.  They cleaned up a lot of crap in mine.

Aahhhh... computers, sumthn I know a little about. Now
I can help YOU for a change Ken ! Sum basic questions
first...
- You say you have to reboot it 10 times or so b4 you
get anything at all on the screen ? When first turned on, provided your screen is connected and also turned on, you should see a bunch of words which talk about BIOS and CONFIGURATION and that type of stuff, or else a logo on the screen (which is used to cover the BIOS stuff up). If you do NOT get this, then your mother board likely has a "hot" fault, which will get worse. The good news is that this does not affect your hard drive which contains your data, so it can be shifted to a new computer when things finally stop altogether.
- HOWEVER... if you do get initial anything up on the
screen, but just won't finish booting up into windows,
then your Hard Disk is either on the way out or loaded
with nasties (ie: viruses, spyware, etc.) Best make
a back up of it while you can in case it is the hard
disk on its way out. Spybot and Adaware as mentioned
above are good stuff for downloaded nasties.

Sorry to hear about your problem, but the thread did make my day a little lighter. I had the same problem a few weeks ago - reformated and reloaded "ME" ( too cheap to update )and it seems to be working at the present time.

Again Thanks for making me feel better today. Laugh and the world laughs with you it takes a computer to really foul things up.

Sounds like you have alot of sypware in your computer. Start your computer in safe mode & try to run a sypware program...do it several times ...then do it in a normal startup. To get in safe mode hit F8 on startup...then select safe mode.  I would also recommend going to Webroot and purchasing spyware & window washer. These are very good programs and should be run offen. I would also recommend Norton 2005 ( not the internet version) or Bulldog for virus & trojan horse protection. I sell & repair computers (for over 30 yrs) and these are what I put in my customer machines.

Good luck

Alan

I also highly recommend grisoft and adaware, the best you can get for your money (it's free) and not as intrusive and CPU hungry (and costly) as over the shelf stuff like Norton or Symantec.  These things are 10 times the size as Grisoft and must run 100 megs of services and take 20% of cpu everytime you mouseover a file. (Allright, I'm pushing it a little, but my point is the same.)

Really sounds like you have a problem with spyware.
You will most likely not lose anything, but as said earlier, take a good
backup (before AND after) the cleanup.  Once you have a good backup after the cleanup, get rid of the one "before", as it will contain these spywares and such.

When you say blank screen for a while ; is it before the first windows logo appears ?  Did you change (remove/add) any hardware recently ?  That would cause you windows to load very slowly a few times, until Windows resolves the possible IRQ conflicts (which it doesn't do well in the first place)

Do you know what is the brand name of your CPU. If not Intel or AMD, it might be overheating.  Well known problem with all cheap CPU's which cause very random problems and hard to diagnose.

One other thing comes to mind, do you have the "automatic windows update" turned on ?  If so, in the background, windows might be downloading a major upgrade like the recent SP2 and 3000 security updates.

Which version of Windoze are you running ?

Okay, that's a lot to chew on here.  Just like our cars, our PC's need regular maintenance and sometimes a complete overhaul.

I would definitely start by the following (in that order):
1) backup of your personal files and what you don't have on CD
2) install anti-virus and run a FULL scan; of every single files...
3) install anti-spyware and run a FULL scan; of every single files...
4) backup
5) if running XP, insure you have SP2 and all the latest security updates (plan a good 2-3 hours here if you don't have it)
(look at www.windowsupdate.com and follow the links; it's straightforward)
6) backup again
7) now you can get rid of backup 1 & 4

8) optional : update firewall (either at router if equiped or separate software)

Finally : everytime you install a software that you downloaded free from the web, run ad-aware again (make sure ad-aware is updated first).

Sorry folks............It's DEAD I'm sending this from the 'puter at the shop. Now it won't even boot enough to get to "starting Windows..."
Even the recovery disc won't do anything............... one 44 magnum in the brain ought to do it........... I might be gone for a while until I can get this thing fixed or demolished. DAMMIT!!!!!!

That's a bummer!

If you ear a series of beep and then it freezes, count them and let me know.  Some bios also emit short beep and long beep, you need to differentiate them (in order and the count).

You can then do a lookup online (of your BIOS website) and see what the error code means.

(If it's only one short beep before if shows the BIOS info screen, it's okay.)

I'M BAAAAACK!!! Actually, I just brought the 'puter from the shop home.
This other 'puter just wouldn't do anything. I turn it on, it brings up the HP logo, beeps once, and then goes to a black screen. Sometimes it says, "Starting Windows", but then it just goes blank again. P.O.S.! Anyway, thanks for all the support and info. I think I'm gonna take it to a buddy of mine in the Corvette club here, and see if it's worth fixin.(I doubt it) I'm gonna get some new virus protection on this one right NOW, before it gets a cold and sneezes it's guts out!!! Thanks folks!!
