I am the director of IT for the 4th largest mobil distributor in the USA...
My advice is to FIRST ... backup backup backup....
secon re-format....make certain you have (or have access to)
al the software you'll need to re-install.
after weeks of repairing and duct-tape you'll stll generally have winblows isues.
BTW I advise people to NOT use IE ..use firefox..
and do NOT use outlook.. use thunderbird.
that's my take.. and I manage 500 or more PC's and servers.

Backups are always good.
Formatting and reinstalling isn't the way to go. Joel had to have someone do that before, so I don't think he'd be up for that himself. Of course, if he just wanted to throw money at the problem...
Using another browser is a good option to try, but he is on dial-up, so a 10 MB is a pretty slow 0-60 time.
Nothing wrong with Outlook (or Thunderbird), more of a preference call there - mail client won't cause this problem.
Joel - I'd still download mozilla (let it go overnight) and see if that fixes your problem. or I can burn you a CD and mail it. Let me know.

I agree on the Norton, but get the internet security version. My kids had there PC some infested with stuff it took Norton about 4-5 passes of scans to clean it up. If you run XP and install Norton be sure to turn off the XP firewall and use Norton's. The anti-spam feature is worth the price alone. There are also some freeware registry programs that will look at your registry and do a little housekeeping there too.
Also get SPYBOT and AD-AWERE and run them weekly
