Some of you, my fellow animal lovers, have been here for me a couple of times already.
Tomorrow, I bring my youngest Yorky, Mickey, just 10 months, in for surgery. He needs to have both back legs operated on. Seems the knee caps won't stay in position. His left leg has been totally lame for 7 weeks now, other is also bad but he's been getting around on it, sometimes running as fast as the other guys. But you can see he's in some pain.
Friday we took him to the surgeon recommended by our regular vet. At 10 months, and his size pretty much reached, the doc recommended the surgery now before the "good" leg gets any worse.
The procedure calls for cutting a deeper notch in the lower leg bone for the knee cap to fit into and tightening or loosening ligamints. Both at the same time. He will be allowed to walk on them as soon as he wants. That helps to work the new joints into place. First week is expected to be miserable. About 8-12 weeks total recovery.
The scary part is he will be anesthesized for almost 3 hours. Not a good thing for a little guy.
Thankfully I've had the last few days off work as this has been the only thing on my mind since last Friday.
I look over at him playing with his toys totally oblivious to the torture we're about to put him through! Hoping everything goes allright.
I've lost three of my Yorkies in the last two and a half years. Another, 10 years old, has an untreatable kidney problem diagnosed a year ago that we're kinda preparing for. And I can't bear the thought of losing another, especially a puppy.

Mike;
Man, I feel for you. We lost a Poodle, a Pom and a Yorkie 1 year apart on Christmas nite every time. darn near killed me, especially the Yorkie - Joe. He was my bud. We drank Port together at least once a week from the same glass. I haven't been able to touch the stuff since and that was three years ago.
We now have a Lab/Chow mix (inherited when the kids were sent to Okinawa, 2 Poms (because I said I'd only get another Pom if I could find one that would be all black, male and under 3 lbs when fully grown...and darned if my stepson didn't find one - and we brought his brother home too) and a Yorkie - Fang. He has become my bud even though I love all of them. Having never had kids, they fill that spot for me.
Mickey will be in our thoughts and prayers.
I will say that it is amazing what they are doing in the animal medical field these days. My Poodle was part of a national study on alzheimers. The drug they tested on her has since been brought to the FDA for final approval for humans.
The little guys are tough. Seems the bigger the dog, the bigger wimp they are. Monster is a real wimp. Scared of his own shadow.
Please post soonest to let us know how he is doing.

Oh no, Mike!
Puppy prayers are being said NOW! I have an old Chihuahua that has both back legs that pop in an out of joint. She's 15 and I have not had them operated on. So far she still gets around pretty good. It's genetic in Chihuahua's and it might be for Yorkies too (super small dogs).

Tell Mickey, the other Micki is sayin' pup prayers!

Thanks guys. For a while, I was able to pop the cap back into position, but it made no difference, he still wouldn't put any weight on it. The other one is almost as bad, but maybe a few weeks behind the first in terms of being bad. We hoped he'd grow out of it. But when the second was then diagnosed the same, we were pretty much told they won't fix themselves. One of our past Yorkies, Little B, had it too, but it seemed to come and go. He'd sometimes pick it up and run on just three.

A few weeks ago, he needed 2 of his baby canine teeth pulled as the adult teeth came in along side. With the pain meds he was on, he appeared to use the one leg a little, but not much. Kinda made us realize he was in pain from it. My regular vet wanted to wait til 1 1/2 years to do surgery. Specialist says now is OK. Hope so.
Gotta get up at 4:30AM to drive the 60 miles to the vet. In expected 10" of new snow! Figures.
Mike,
Best wishes for a successful operation.
You are a very caring person to give your canine friends the best care possible.

A lot of people just don't realize how much a pet means. I hope everything works out for your little one!

I'm a little pissed right now. Got the call that all went well and Mickey's doing fine. Didn't have to do bone implants which would have been needed if the notches had to be cut very deep. Asked the surgeon about his hip as she had expressed concern that he may have a problem there. She FORGOT TO TAKE THE HIP XRAY!
They'll do the Xrays and get right back to me.
Well, he does have a problem with the left hip, the leg he's been carrying for weeks.
Then she goes on about how he needed the knee cap surgery regardless of the hip(Oh really?). Says we will allow him to recover from this surgery before we get into the hip. They'll do the hip FREE. To me that means they screwed up! So after 8-12 weeks recovery from this surgery I'm wondering if I'll even see any difference, or will he still carry his left leg in the air!
And then we do this again?
Hopefully the knee recovery will be a little easier since it sounded as if it wasn't as bad as we thought.
This was a highly recommended orthopedic surgeon, too.
The main thing is that the little guy came thru with flying colors. It really sux to have to do another surgery as the trach tube is harder on the smaller dogs but it sounded like he handled that ok as well.
When do you get him home? If he is staying overnite, will you get to see him this evening?
