O-tay, here's what happened to my new can-o-worms.
I tried to burn some data files, and some pics off on a C/D. I put the disc in, but the DVD/RW(whatever) don't do squat, but lock the whole mess up. It used to work, cause I have used the burner for C/Ds and DVDs.
On top of that, it also took out my ISP program, AND, my AVG virus protection. How the heck did that happen?
I tried the "system restore"("to an earlier date"), but it wants me to back up all my important data, but guess what? THE friggin BURNER DON"T WORK!!    AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGG!!!
I just took it back to the place I bought it(in JUNE!), and they said they'ed "take a look". I'm so P.O.ed!!!
Meanwhile, I've got this here "loaner", that's actually a "refurbished" set-up that I have to use the AOL crap on again. Please........somebody shoot me!

Why don't you down load your information to the Zip drive??

Then you can carry on the restore....

Good Luck Joel....

Vette(s): 1977 #s matching Orange L48 4-speed and a 2000 Black FRC 6-speed BOTH SOLD :(

Another solution to your problem is to buy a jump drive.  They cost $30 - $90 depending upon size and rebate amount.  You can get one at any Best Buy, Office Max, etc. store.  They will work on any computer with USB ports, and an OS (operating system) of Windows 98 SE or higher.

Simple plug it in and copy files to the drive.  Really simple to use and it's portable.  Good luck.

Not big on computers... but did you say you were trying to do a restore or recovery on XP...? If you are doing a restore to a certain date... I don't think you "have" to do a back-up... the reason to back up or save is when  you open the System Restore console, System Restore requires you to restart your computer... System Restore does not affect your personal data files (such as Microsoft Word documents, browsing history, drawings, favorites, or e–mail) so you won't lose changes made to these files. How about just trying a "restore" back a couple days to where it was working OK... 2 cruzn38652.2321064815

Been there, done that!
What I wanted to do, was wipe the hard drive, and then reload. But......I couldn't do that without backing up all the files I have, and.... I couldn't do that because the DVD/CD burner wouldn't work! I did install a "floppy" drive on the turd, but it would have taken forever, and a couple hunnert(probably) discs to do that. Even then, it still wouldn't correct the problem with the DVDrw drive.
The guy at the repair place said they could hook up an external drive and do a back-up, for $60!! I said ONLY if repairing the DVD would require a reformat, would I do that. Then, he says, "Well, we may have to send it back to HP to get it repaired, and they'll erase everything, anyway". I told the geek to make sure they called before that happened.
I am definitely gonna look into the external storage(zip drive) set-up.
Thanks for all the input, and for listening(reading?) to my

My ZIP DRIVE is always used.    Mostly, I down load my files at the end of each month to make sure anything happens to the computer or house I have my files saved in my fire proof box.

Joel,  hope you computer gets fixed right....
