Temporary taxes are a lot like cockroaches: sometimes they refuse to die.  Back in 1898, the United States engaged in a brief military conflict with Spain. To pay for the three month skirmish, Congress decided to tap the super rich by enacting a "temporary" tax on phone services, which at the time were an extreme luxury.  When the war ended, the tax was supposed to end.  But here we are, 108 years later, and the tax has managed to hang on, even though it hits the rich and poor alike.  But this week's Outrage has a happy ending: Congressman Miller, author of a bill to exterminate the federal phone tax, joined Treasury Secretary Snow on Thursday to announce that the IRS will stop taxing long-distance services beginning July 31, 2006.  Score one for the taxpayer. after 108 years!)

Well I'll be diddled!! For us here in MD, that savings will only be a "small" downpayment on the 72% electricity rate hike going into effect on 1 July 2006!!!!! So much for deregulation keeping prices "reasonable" with competition (or lack thereof).

Sounds great but then the IRS will do something to tax the local phone service to even the battle.  Or will they!!

Yep, good for us, the politicians will refund a few billion bucks to the tax payers.  Then they will discover that there isn't enough money left to go around, and then guess what.  Another tax increase.

Maybe some time should be spent cutting the budget rather trying to buy votes with money that has already been spent.

I don't know about you, but if my pay check was increasing as fast as the taxes I could spend some time coming up stupid ideas to.

Just a thought.

Having worked with the Congress, I can tell you that these folks are very
adept at figuring out trade-offs. They know that the long-distance tax is
small potatoes when it comes to Federal revenues (remember--this is
Congress, so unless you're talking multi-billions of dollars, they don't
really take a whole lot of notice).

What's coming down the pike--and it's only a matter of time--will be
taxes on the Internet. They can readily see just how much commerce is
moving onto the 'Net (including things like long-distance calling). So the
idea is probably 'drop this small-potatoes tax, and clear the decks for
taxing the really big enchilada'.

So far they've held off, but only because they were told (and sold) on the
idea (by Internet industry lobbyists) that imposing taxes on this emerging
technology would only serve to slow its growth, delay the digital future,
impede continued American domination of this vital sector, etc. etc.

The more successful the Internet grows, the more irresistible it will be as
a target for new taxes. And that'll be on the Federal level--just imagine
what the states will have in mind for local sales taxes on Internet
commerce!

Hold onto your wallets...or what's left of 'em, anyway--

Like it was said earlier... [What's coming down the pike--and it's only a matter of time--will be
taxes on the Internet.]
It would appear we are being set up for the Kill. (Kinda like free checking, free debit / credit cards, got your foot in the door and now we can make you pay...pay...and pay some more!
I sure hope it won't adversely effect the good things in life. (Like C3VR)

We are already asked to estimate how many dollars we spent on purchases over the internet and then send New York State the sales tax on those purchases when we file our state income tax.
Talk about milking us for every dime!
