Well, a simple trailing arm replacement has turned into a complete rear suspension rebuild.....Imagine that! Prior to this work, the car is mechanically original, shocks & all.
While I'm in the midst of doing this work, I would like to retrieve the car's build sheet, or tank sticker as it called. I am assuming that it is still there based on the cars originality.
Has anyone done this or have any suggestions on how much more work this would require?
p.s. the N.C.M. only has build sheets on file from the Bowling Green plant, they told me that St. Louis typically destroyed these sheets 6 months after the cars were built.

You're gonna have to drop the tank. If it's still there, be very careful trying to remove it, it's 36 years old and the cheapest paper GM could find. Before you touch it, take some good digital pictures of it.
Mine has been in an album since 1988 and it's so brittle, it won't come out.

Dave,
If dropping the tank requires dropping the differential, (which I think it will) than the tank sticker is staying there for another 36 years.
Do you know of any site(s) where the RPO information is available?
I thought that it would be nice to have some documentation to go along with the car.
Thanks,
Anthony

I tried to research mine even with the info on the sticker I still couldn't locate the selling dealer. Unless your car was previously registered with the NCM, I doubt you'll have much luck.
The tank will come out without removing the diff.
Drain the tank and disconnect the fuel line and sending unit wire, remove the overflow boot. The straps bolt to a crossmember, unbolt those. The crossmember bolts to the frame, take it down and the tank should come right out.
Oh yeah, spare tire carrier will need to be removed as well.

dropping the tank is not that difficult, took me an hour. before i removed mine i looked around the top of the tank with a mirror and a flashlight and could see my build sheet. in agree, take lots of pics before trying to remove it. i used a heat gun to soften the goo holding it

I got mine off my '77 this summer when I was rebuilding the rear suspension. I didn't have to drop the tank. I just stuck my hand up the side, felt the paper, and very carefully took it off. It came off in one piece but about 95% of whatever was on there was not legible anymore.

Well I definitely will try to reach up for it before I remove anything.
However, if I end up dropping the tank, how difficult will it be to get it back in, and what parts (mounting brackets, squeak pads) should I be prepared to replace?
Any idea what side it I should look at?
Thanks,
Anthony

There's really not much to the tank, Check the condition of the steel straps and bolts. I wouldn't spend good money on "correct" pads. When my pads arrived I was very surprised to see it was nothing but roofing paper "felt". You can buy that at Home Depot or any building supply. For the cost of one kit fro a vendor, you can buy a roll, enough to do a thousand tanks!
I'd put a new gasket on the filler neck too. Clean the tank and touch up any areas that may be starting to rust. If you do in fact find the sticker and want to save it, I scanned mine and printed a copy to put back on the tank and saturated it with clear.
