Tux,
I hope you reported it to the police. Not so much for your benefit, but it may help them to catch the guys (or gals, who knows?).
I think the motion detector and a flood light would be effective.

Sorry to hear about your loss. Years ago, my apartment was broken into while I was at a cast party. The scumbags pretty much cleaned me out, even took a twelve pack of beer from the refrigerator. Fortunately, I had renters insurance and most of my loss, but not the beer! was covered. But I still was really angry and since then have taken steps to protect myself ever since.
I would most definitely check the fliuds in the Corvettes to be sure some strange concocsion hasn't found it's way into the gas tank or oil pan.
I hear you regarding retaliation. Confronting some low like, crack head scumbag could be VERY dangerous. I think the dead bolt on the door is the best option. Is the door and the door jam nice and sturdy? If not, the door can be easily kicked in rendering the dead bolt worthless.

Larry, I'm sorry to hear that...I know also how it feels, but my story ended differently, I think you'll appreciate this.
As many of you know, I'm a Police Officer here in NE Pa. I have the good fortune, and seniority, to patrol the area I live in.
Back in March of '03, I get a call from my neighbor that 3 Hispanic kids just kicked my back door in. I got there within 1 minute, did about mach 2 to get there, and found the kids in my children's room, stealing my son's favorite DVD's and piggy bank.
The look on the kids faces was priceless!
I had them all on their knees with their hands behind their heads quick. Funny how they no speak english, but they do speak Berretta!!!
One kid had the bad fortune of mouthing off to me. I'll admit this, the protective Father came out in me. By the time my Sergeant arrived there, I had the worthless piece of **** in the air...with one hand. The other one was emphasizing my point..with authority!
When it came tome for the hearing. The Juvenile Judge pretty much called them the dumbest kids he's ever met. I did have a chance to address them in court, at which time I emphasized my prediction of what will happen to them if they ever step foot on my property again.
The Judge sent them away to logging camp for 2 years.
Since then, My house is buttoned up tighter than Fort Knox. Full alarm system, IR sensors, and the lower level windows area all have steel bars welded to the frames.
I guess I was just lucky that day.
I saw one of the kids at the Mall not too long ago. I was there with my family..
The little bastard ran the other way...Now that's justice.
Good luck buddy.
Alan

I have yet to encounter anyone who does not speak Beretta, Smith and Wesson or Colt.....

Wally,
Funny how that translates into the "Universal Language".
Alan
Absolutely the universal language...
Tux,
You might consider putting brackets on each side of the door just above the doorknob. These brackets would bolt into the 2X4 door frame studs either under or just past the trim. The brackets stick up about 6 inches and out from the door just over 1 1/2 inches. Place a 2X6 inside the brackets that spans the door and out past the frame.
Alternatively, if it is a solid core door, bolt a 1X1 metal bar onto the door with two holes drilled 4 or so inches in from the frame on each end. Build a metal 1X1 bar that spans past the door frame and has two corresponding holes to match the ones on the door. Use J-bolts in the two holes on the bar not on the door and have the "J" portion of the bolt drop into the bar on the door. "Use this only if the door swings outward" If it does, then you need to tack weld the hinge pins into the hinge plates or removal of the hinges makes the door a big teeter totter.
These are much more effective than any deadbolt and, since this is not a normal passage for the family in case of emergency, you can make it more secure. This does not constitute "baiting" as electrifying the knob would and it does make the door infinitely more secure.
Unfortunately, if they want in, they will get in. The locks only keep the honest people honest. But if yours is difficult to get into, they will move on to someone else.

Well I put the deadbolt in place over the last few days.... Today I came home to find my storm door open, air cylinder hanging, and safety chain yanked out.
Normally I would have said "Damn Wind" but I noticed the latch pulled loose. Hmmn, I guess there are a few items left that somebody wanted....
Lucky for them they they didn't get inside.... More SURPRISES besides the deadbolt await inside. All perfectly legal and non combative.... DAMMIT... ;-) .Tuxblacray 2007-12-05 16:13:08
