My wife and I will be in washington D.C. feb.28-march 2 for a conference for the disabled. We are looking at staying a couple days extra and I was wondering if any of you world travels or locals would have some tips and pionters that you might not have access from the normal web sites, all have the same tourist info. |ohwell| I was questioning renting a car or is traffic like seattles |laugh| I was also interested in any thing cool to see that might not be listed on any tourist site, nothing kinky got the wife, |smokin| plan on going to arlington cemetery ( have to) maybe Fords Theater, and the F.B.I. building. We do like to go to murder mystery dinners so if any one knows of one in the area that would be great. thanks in advance for the help and Happy New Year to all, and if you can still TIP one |cheers| then have one for me, this will be my 12th one sober and happy to be.......... |wavey|

Anytime I go to DC, I like to spend time in the museums. They are all interesting and you always learn something new.
The driving can be rather hectic at times. Public trans isn't bad.

Bad,

D.C. is a great place to visit.

Went there alot while in college @ U-Delaware.

Depending on where you stay, the Metro subway hits most points in the district.

Hit the Smithsonian, & buy new sneakers before you go. Lots of wallking.

Let us know how the new WWII Memorial is!

Enjoy,

Anthony

Go there for business a lot and live close by.

Yes, bring good walking shoes, and most definitely ride the subway ( Metro ). Rental cars do not work in downtown DC. There is ABSOULTELY no place to park, and if there is, it is flat rate and expensive.

Was down there this week with the grand kids. A must is the Air and Space museum, also the brand new museum out by Dulles Airport ( REALLY BIG Airplanes that don't fit in the one downtown). I helped to install the "Infininte Express" video system in the Einstein planetarium, so know the area well.

Just do the tourist thing, use Taxi's, and the Metro.....BTW, Dulles is the least expensive airport...Regan/National is accessable to the Metro, but somewhat expensive.

Drop me an e mail if you have any questions. |thumb|

I live not far from DC, and worked there before retiring. Lots of places to go...not renting a car is good advice if you plan on staying within the city...take the Metro. Driving is OK if you travel outside the city for sightseeing, but there is no good time to be on the Capital Beltway...some times of day are simply worse than others.

The Smithsonian most definitely...you can spend years there and not see it all. Many of the government buildings are under much increased security, so be prepared. I used to be a Federal officer, and whenever I happened to be in the FBI Building, it was tightly regulated then, before 9/11...it must be really tough now.

One of the little known jewels of DC is the Navy Yard. The Navy Museum is great...my Dad worked in that building as a machinist during WWII when it was the big gun shop, so I tend to think highly of it. The Navy Yard also has the Marine Corps Museum which houses the Iwo Jima flag...you can't stand there and see it without feeling awe.

Enjoy the city when you're here. Feel free to contact me if you have the time. |thumb|

Born and raised in the suburbs south east of DC (In MD). It really does depend on where you're staying if you should rent a car or not. Metro goes a lot of places, but is nothing like what I've become accustomed to going to school near Manhattan. Although the DC Metro is clean (for a metro) and quiet, it doesn't hit many places outside the beltway.

if you do rent I would highly recommend going to Monticello. It was Thomas Jefferson's home and is stunning. lots of neat innovative things in addition to just beautiful architecture. Mount Vernon is similar (George Washington's home). The grounds are larger, but the actual home is less impressive, in my opinion.
