viewed the gathering agenda and saw the link for the radios. what is the difference in these two radios (other than coast)of the radio listed

Vette(s): Used to own a 1979 Corvette now owned by JB79
Looks to me that the 1438 has less features than the 1448.  The 1448 has 20 mile range, the 1438 is 14 miles. The 1448 has some sort of scramble feature.
 
The 1438 should be sufficient.  I can't see spending the extra money for the 1448.
