I am a big fan of the X-Games. I skated (inline skates) in half-pipes for over 12 years. I did it at an almost professional level. I don't recall how many bones I broke doing this, but I sure remember when I fractured my neck (fifth vertebre).
Until 2 days ago, I can say that I have felt or seen (live) some of the worst crashes, but nothing like this : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q23NWnIcpz0
Amazingly, he will be back skating in about a month. Just the fact that he walked away (after a good 5 minutes on the ground) from it is speechless.
Just wanted to tip my hat to those guys; they are more than true athletes because:
1) they don't take enhancing drugs like 80% of Olympic "athletes" do
2) they need WAY more physical coordination and strength than A LOT of Olympic "sports"
3) when they miss; you can bet it hurts for real
You might see them as "skater punks" in you neighborhoods, but if you just give them a space to be creative (public skatepark), they make really good people.

Ex-Skater-Punk...

Wouldn't you have to survive a lot of those crashes just to perfect your trick ?
I'm glad the lord made me afraid to do that. I hate wearing a cast.

Hey Ex-Skater-Punk;
I totally agree with you. As a former motorcycle trail rider/mountain bike rider and past/current fast car guy I know the negative press you can get. These guys are true athletes and the ones at the local and state level don't get the benefit of the "olympic village" to train and have all their needs catered to.
My hat's off to 'em!
