Well, on my 79 only the outside lights light up for the brakes, which kinda annoys me. I'm thinking about getting a few hundred 30k MCD white LEDs and converting the tail lights to LEDs. I'd just pack a bunch facing straight back onto the outside brake lenses, and then do a ring or two around the outside of the reverse lens on the inside lights. That way both would light up on braking, and then the reverse lights would still work. I'd also convert the reverse bulb to a bunch of these LEDs.

Any opinions on if LED tail lights would look crappy on a 30 year old car before I do it? I'm no stranger to electronics so if I did it, it would look professional, no hack jobs.

Thanks
-Josh

At places like Pep Boys you can buy LED lights with a 1157 base so they can simply replace your bulbs with no modifications.  I'd try that and see if you like the look before doing any serious modifying to the housings.

I think an LED backup light with an 1156 base us available as well.

I don't want to just use a LED tree light, that would look mostly the same as I have now. I want to do rings of LEDs inside the lenses, and then the same around the reverse lens.

I bought the replacement tail lamp kit that converts them to all tail lamps and no back-up lamps.  I installed LED's in all of them, and I like the effect.  It does modernize the car (82).  It is dazzling to followers, and it put to rest the question of whether or not I should install a "third" brake light kit.

Just ran across this, may be the answer for the led tail light conversion.

Re: Crossfire1982, (beautiful Vette by the way), the Eckler's lamps only work in the existing sockets, which means they, too, will only work on the outboard lamp positions.  It doesn't address the other part  of defsegx's question about four functional tail lamps.  The answer is still going to involve a conversion of the back-up lamp position sockets to the tail lamp sockets.  The difference is in the pins on the lamps.  Look at an 1157, which is a dual element bulb, meant for your tail lamps; one element is for parking lamp, the other is brighter, for brake/turn signal function.  Now look at the 1156 bulb: only one element, because it only does one thing.  The sockets are only for their respective bulbs.  To convert, you need to get two more tail lamp sockets.  This is why I went with the bubble-lens four-way tail lamp conversion kit first, then bought LED bulbs for them.

I think the lamps on the Ecklers site are a great way to brighten up two tail lamps, but they won't work for four without modification like I mentioned above.  You can't simply disconnect the back-up leads and jumper them in-line with the tail lamps; that won't work.  You literally need two more tail lamp sockets AND jumper them in line with the existing tail lamps.

Hope this clears it up.

Thanks for the compliment Stephen.  Yep, I converted my vette to 4 tail /stop lights some time back using the bubble lenses.  The conversion kit for that comes with two new sockets for twin element bulbs that bayonette into the housings.  The two inside light sockets are removed and the two element ones installed in the mount.  The new sockets are scotch locked onto the existing wiring of the outside (original brake) lights.  I left my backup sockets under the car with bulbs out, plastic bagged and wire tied out of the way for easy return to original later if desired.

Corvette Central also sells the LED tail lights as a set.........part #493166. You will then need a led flasher (they claim).

Hey, man, that vette of yours is gorgeous, even under the hood.  I don't know if I can put that much work into the appearance under the hood before I re-engine, which will be a while, because mine is running strong esp. since I solved the cooling crisis---(see C3 engine forum), and I don't have $5,000 burning a hole in my pocket.

The kit you are talking about for tail lights is the same one I got and installed which I was referring to.  I installed LED lamps, and it looks great.  As far as the flasher goes, the original flasher works, but I think it gets over-heated, because I have had to replace it three times so far in a year.  The symptom is that it will flash too fast, like a panic attack or something.

Guys, all I have is a cell phone camera for digital pics.  It sucks.  The pictures suck.  And I suck.  I can't attach them cause I don't know how.  I'll let my son teach me.  Then I'll get my wife a real digital camera for a present, so I can use it, too.

Sorry.

LED lights are the coolest in all types of vehicles. Just wait 5/10 years and they're going to be on every vehicle coming from the factory. Shortly after that, they'll be in every room of your house.
