On my 74 Corvette I am trying to verify a matching numbers motor. I have a copy of the original title. It has on it under mtr. no. - V8 4S431877. That number matches the last 8 digits in my serial number. Now on the block on the lip in front of the right side head I have found the numbers - V0607CL. Where else should I be looking for other numbers? This doesnt look like a match of any type to my serial number. The metal tag in the drivers door jam has this information on it - Chevrolet K18 Trim 404 10L Paint.
So what do I truley have or do I need to find other numbers somewhere else? This car has only 26,000 miles on it and I have documentation from the previous owners on the the mileage when it was transferred to the next owner. I am the 4th owner. Is there a place I can look up what all the serial number digits mean as well.
Thanks
Rodney

Low miles (was only 8,900 when I bought it in March 2006) - Now 54K miles. Original owner bought it as an investment for son's college expenses.

What are the first few numbers of your VIN? Do you know if you've got a 350 or a 454 motor? A 350 will be a J or a T as the fifth number. A 454 will have a "Z"
You can go to "Tools" then "VIN Decoder" up on the menu line of this site to get a little more details. I don't recall 100% where the remainder of the numbers will be that you can use to match things up, but this will give you a start.
The trim tag shows the approximate build date, the original interior and the original paint color. Unfortunately, I don't ahve the books hat decipher any of that either, but I know there are strings with some of this info here, as well as plenty of very knowledgeable folks here that can help you more!
I wanted a Corvette my whole life, but I never dreamed of all the wonderful people I would meet because of it!
Sorry, I guess I didnt give enough information with my description. I have a 350 engine with a 400 Hydro Trans. The first few numbers are 1Z37J. I am also wondering how to tell the gear ratio of the rear end as well. I do have the original window sticker but that doesnt tell me rear end option.
Thanks
Rodney

If there isn't a option code for the rear carrier then it is most likely the 3.08 (standard for automatic trans)

under the shopping tab there is a section for manuals. under all
corvette books you can get the corvette black book or corvette by
numbers. both are good reference books.

Rod,
The V0607CL is the engine date & model
V= Flint Engine Plant
0607= June 7
CL = A letter sems to be missing
CLA would be a 195 Hp w/ Auto
CLC would be a 195 Hp w/ Auto & Calif Emissions
CLD would be a 250 Hp w/ Auto
Your "J" in the VIN should translate to a base 195 HP motor.
You trim tag of K18 should mean that the body of your car was assembled & painted on June 18. Your car would have rolled off of the line on June 19 provided there were no problems with the build or if the 18th was a Friday.
Good luck,
Anthony

The VIN derivative will also be stamped on the same pad as you found the engine date/code. Look closely, and you will see it. Be careful using any sharp objects to clean the stamp pad...don't wanna scratch it up!!!
Looks like you have the correct, factory installed engine in your car, from the numbers you have posted.
The gear ratio code can be found on the very bottom of the differential carrier, just in front of the spring.
The 3:08 was standard for the auto, with the 3:36 an option.
