Hi Bill, Welcome to a great place to find information and friends with one common interest. You kind of got me with your mystery internals.........hmmm. Anyway enjoy!

Hey guys. Well, I had a 79 L48 auto Vette, dark blue/oyster cloth, for about 8 years. Sold it about 16 years ago. Have had RX-7s and Trans Ams since then. But now I’m back in glass. I’m a sucker for the styling of C3s of any year but the just-right styling of the 78s/79s get me the most. (A chrome-bumpered convertible is 2nd on my lust list.)
I set my mind on a black on black 4 speed and saw one in Las Vegas on E-bay, stock, 90K. Then I did a Google search for 79s for sale. Found a site I’d never heard of that advertised only C3s. There was one for sale in CT that had an upgraded engine and suspension. In a sense I bought it sight unseen. I wasn’t there in person to see it, I mean. Scary! It was a 10 hour drive there and I considered just picking it up myself but ultimately I had it shipped.
The truck driver wouldn’t deliver it to Roanoke, too far out of his way. He was heading to VA Beach, so I met him in Richmond and had a 3 hour drive back home. Stressful a couple times over, wondering if the car was as portrayed and whether it was that roadworthy right off the bat. Luckily the owner was honest and it was the car pictured online. No tears in the leather, showing a believable 94K.
I took possession and drove it across the street to gas it up. Someone drove next to me and said, “Maaaaan, that’s a nice Vette. How long have you owned it?” “About a minute and a half,” I answered. When hitting the highway, a car passed me and blew his horn to get my attention and gave me a thumbs up. This is all within 10 minutes of owning the car! The drive home was no sweat, luckily. (The previous owner bought a mid-90s ZR1 from Corvette Mike after selling the 79 to me.)
Some say that the Muncie’s are clunky but this one has a good balance between meatiness and slickness. Maybe the transmission was rebuilt along with the engine. The previous owner doesn’t know. But it’s such a hoot, and so fast, to shift that I get a little bummed when I’m on the open road. Sure, having a stick shift can be a little clumsy in parking lots, on hills, or in tight spaces, but overall it adds so much fun to the driving experience that it’s worth the tradeoff to me. I’ve learned to pull the stick to the left when heading down on the 1-2 shift to avoid the occasional audible crunch, and the 2-3 shift has a midpoint notch, but overall it’s a toggle switch and you can confidently begin releasing the clutch before you’re settled into the next gear, knowing it won’t miss. On a Ferrari website, someone was saying he drove an 86 Vette and condemned the stick-shift as feeling like “a baseball bat in a barrel of coconuts,” so I feel lucky that mine is so snick-snick sweet.
People approach me at gas stations to compliment the car. It’s almost like driving an exotic. I offer to let them sit in the car if they want. My area is 2 for 4 so far when it comes to other Vette owners waving at me. I’m torn between driving the wheels off her or preserving its condition. Ultimately I’ll probably put one or two thousand miles a year on it. Good to be back in the club!
PS I've added front and rear spoilers and American Racing S200 wheels to it. Looks sick! Unfortunately, with my slow dial-up (I live out in the sticks) I wasn't able to upload pics to this site before it timed out. I'd be happy to send you pics of the 79, though, if you e-mail me at Netgliider@aol.com (two i's).

*chuckling* By mystery internals I mean that the previous owner isn't sure of the compression, what brand names are within, etc. It was rebuilt before he bought it and he, for whatever reason, didn't get that info. Maybe the owner before that didn't know either. I only know of the Holley carb, Edelbrock manifold etc by seeing them.

Wow Bill, It's nothing but a great feeling riding in a C3 Classic. Thanks for letting us in on the stats, (as much as you can). You definitely will fit in with the C3VR family. Oh I also like your motto...........that's so true! Take care, Larry

Thanks Larry. I made sure to have a lower-case g to begin my name so it didn't look like Classic with a c .

As for my signature, right on. People can PM me on it, pro or con, if they wish. I'm open to that, but I'm here for the glassworks talk.
Woah, that is one dazzling engine you have there. You must be proud to lift the hood at cruise-ins. And, yes, C3s are a relatively affordable way to get a hard-core sportscar experience. And it doesn't take much to get the performance more than respectable.

Thanks guys. Luke, don't sue me but I've had one your Vette pics saved and in my screen saver rotation for months now when I was just a non-member lurker. :)

Bill, The rolling frame is 100% finished, I just brought the body into the garage. Now to lift the body high enough to clear the engine and fuel tank. Thanks for the compliment. Bill, I must warn you to look out for a guy named eboAs for my signature, right on. People can PM me on it, pro or con, if they wish. I'm open to that, but I'm here for the glassworks talk.
