I worked most of my career at Saginaw Steering Gear Division of General Motors in steering systems engineering. From 1970 through 1985 I was supervisor with responsibilities for flexible steering shaft couplings, power steering hoses, and lip seals, o-rings, and other rubber boots and gaskets. The C2/C3 power steering hoses and flex couplings were my responsibilities. I have owned three C3 Corvettes; a 1975 L82, 4-speed convertible, a 1976 L48, 4-speed, and a 1980 L48 4-speed. I retired in 2001 after a 39 year engineering career at Saginaw. I currently don't own a Corvette.

I was fortunate that the years that I owned brand new Corvettes, I was able to gather a lot of engineering information on the pumps, gears, hoses, steering columns, and flex couplings that Saginaw manufactured for those C3 models.
FYI, I do not rebuild or refurbish steering components. The biggest reason is that I do not have a library of parts that would be needed to repair various years of Saginaw components. Also I am very concerned that steering columns are actually quite fragile. Shipping them back and forth typically can cause more damage than was being repaired.
Over the last 10 years of retirement, I have authored many disassembly and repair instructions on refurbishing steering components as well as informational papers. Go to the following address:
Click on Steering
Click on Jim Shea's Steering Papers
Click on Corvette Steering or A & F-Car Steering
You will find a lot of my papers to be quite lengthy but quite complete. Later papers have more pictures and drawings included.
