Vette(s): 1974 454 4 speed black

Thanks folks,

I signed up because I just picked up my second Vette. I was approached by a guy at work who needed to get rid of a neglected project.

Long story - short, yesterday I towed a vette home.

What it is: 1974 with a 454 & 4 speed with less than 40k miles.

P.O. claimed the engine is original and has never been removed or hot rodded.

The car has been stored outside (California) since 1980. She is terribly rough but I think I can get it to start without too much work.

Front and rear fascia - gone, rotted away. Passenger side rear quarter damaged.

Interior, nasty but all there. Power windows a plus.

I cannot get the hood open yet but will continue to try tonight. Driver’s side unlocks but passenger side still locked.

I am looking forward to a complete decode of all the tags. I am a Mopar collector so I will need a little assistance regarding tag location and decoding.

The thing that I am most interested in is the claim by the PO that this is a special order car with black paint that does not appear to be an advertised color option. Yes the car is black and I have not found any evidence to the contrary yet.

What is the story, could a car be special ordered black or this BS.

Pics will be posted in a few days when I get everything unpacked and opened.

Kev

Kevin,

Take a look at this:

And tell us what the Trim Tag Paint Code says on your car.

Also, you can use our VIN Decoder, but back then, the VIN doesn't tell you much.

Folks,
Got home tonight and was able to get the hood open right away, got to luv WD40!
I checked the tag on the driver dor jam and I think we can conclude the car is a factory Black car.  The tag says spec paint in big leters, allong with D16 date and trim 404.
It has carpeted dor pannels, think I read that means optional interior?
It has AC and power windows as well.

So when I opened the hood I could not believe how unmolested the engine compartment is. I think I am looking at original hoses, belts and plug wires. This makes sense as the car only has 34,604 miles. It has a holley on the intake but the original carb and air cleaner are in the car.

So how do I verify the trans and suspension options that were available?
What are the most sought after options or combos and how does one verify them?

Story is P.O. bought the car in 79 but could not get it smogged. After he started to fiddle with it he lost interest and just parked it where you see it in the photos. That was it, This car has not moved since 79. What kills me is he had a 3 car garage that was mostly empty and this car sat outside for thirty years. I cannot help but think how nice it would look if it was inside all these years.
I have posted a bunch of pics at the link below. Enjoy Kev
