My latest purchase is a '68 Rally Red, L-79, 4spd close ration, numbers matching Roadster .  I've had 10 corvettes ('68 & 75 - C3s; 86 & 90 - C4s; '98 & '98 C-5s; 06, 10 and 12 Grand Sport C6s; and finally this '68)  over the last 40+ years.  My first was a '68 and that is the car that gave me the bug. 

 

After showing my '12 Grand Sport Torch Red Roadster for the last 2 yrs and winning the NCCC Rocky Mountain Top Car Show Competitor - Men, I wondered did I want to show and shine the same car for another year?  I discussed with my wife and she said whatever I decided was ok with her, so I decided to look for a classic that was affordable. 

 

My memories brought me back to my first corvette, a '68.  I started looking on the internet at C3s and after a few days the C3 lines started speaking to me.  The more I looked at them the more I wanted one.  I know the '68 had it's initial flaws being the first year of a change, but there is also the history of being first.  It was the last year of the L-79 327ci 350 hp which is a fiesty and reliable engine. 

 

Decided to find a '68, long story short, I bought this one on ebay for a great price from Fayetteville AR.  I didn't know it then but the seller and the vette was registered on the C3VR.

 

I sold my Grand Sport for asking price and the buyer and his wife were amazed at the look of the car when I backed it out of the garage.

 

So I've been asked several times why I sold my GS and bought a '68.  I told them for the fun of it.  The new GS was a fantastic driving car, but all I could do is shine and show it.  With the '68 I can actually work on it.......no computer required!  I've already replace Running Lites, I have new repro chrome bumpers front and back and guards waiting to go on; I replaced the nose and gas tank crossed flags; new rally rings and caps.  I even found a removable hardtop and went to CA and retrieved it................Why......because its fun.

 

I have the typical Brake lite when braking, which I will take advice and bleed the brakes.  Yes tempermental, but I get just as many looks and waves as I did with my GS.

 

I also have a '98 Torch Red Roadster with 68K miles on it that rides like new for when I want to take a smooth and quiet ride.  I will be using this for the National Caravan in Aug. as it was born in Bowling Green.

 

So there you have it, '68 full circle to a '68 with C4s, C5, C6s in between.  67yrs young and still working, because my wife won't let me quit until I quit buying corvettes.  I have to convince her this is my last.
