Help with electrical issue

Hello!  I need help with an electrical issue.  When I turn the key to the on position, the amp meter pegs to the negative.  Car starts and runs fine, but the amp gauge will go the positive pegged when running, then eventually comes down some.  this is a 72 vette.  any suggestions?
