Island fever is truely a problem. In 92 moved to the Hilo side of the Big Island to build my house. Within 2 years my wife and I divorced(since remarried) and started planning to leave, separately. Got back together as we saw we both needed to escape. Took almost 3 years to sell my house, market was terrible at the time. Left it empty in the care of a neighbor for almost 2 years and returned to Chicago. Accepted $170K just to get it over with. Found out recently the house resold 5 1/2 years later for $325K!! Believe it may now be worth $400K plus!!
Worked on Kauai shortly after hurricane Iniki in 92. Island was devastated. That was one of my complaints living there, working off island all the time. Air fare and lodging were always provided but being away from home was miserable. Did a lot of work on Maui, too. Of course if you're retired work isn't a problem. But good medical care could be. Spent a few days in the hospital thanks to a head on crash with an idiot driver.
I still think about it but would never return. I justify leaving by telling myself I wouldn't have my Corvettes except maybe the black79. I probably would never have shipped it over, tho. Almost sold it in 94. Wouldn't have my beloved Yorkies, my present home with my barn that I love, or my own business.
So many people that I met there that had moved from the mainland were also planning to leave. You can only do the same things so many times! But I would have loved to have driven the Vette there! Mike
