Vette(s): 1978 Pace Car, w/15,000 miles

Thanks for the welcome, Ron!  I see that you have a 1978, and so do I.  I'm sure there is another section for mechanical questions, but plesase indulge me for a moment.  .  .  I purchased my 78 Pace Car on the Saturday before Easter.  It appears to have 15,000 miles; 13,700 on the purchase date.  Anyway, I noticed what appeared to be a rattle from time to time from the front right corner of the engine compartment.  .  .  associates of mine identified it as a "heat shield" rattle, insinuating that it only occured when the engine was warm.  Evenutally this sound went away.  .  .  or I just stopped noticing it.  It was only obivious when the car idled for a while.

As I have begun to "restore" the Pace Car, but buying or upgrading items, today I installed the hood insulation that had been missing.  Well, the rattle immediately became a constant issue.  .  .  .more than ever before!  Could it be that the insulation is containing the heat under the hood (as it should), and is causing the heat shield rattle to be more severe?  This sounds logical, but have you experienced this issue or heard of it before?

As I said, I'm sure their is another section where I should be asking this question, so please direct me to that location.  .  .  But, before doing so, are your rims aluminum, and if so, how did you "bring them back to life?" Thanks in advance!  -Ron

I don't know about the rattling issue,I dont have that problem with mine.As for the wheel question, yes they are aluminum, they came on the car from the factory ,the spinners were added on later by the previous owner.I use Eagle chrome cleaner-polish on them,it does a nice job any of the good ones will work,Mothers is another good one.don't use steel wool on them,I apply it with a terry cloth ,rub it in real good, let it sit for about 15 minutes then wipe it off with a clean terry cloth, they come out nice

Ron, that rattle was probably the catalytic converter.  The substrate was probably loose.  After some time it breaks up and blows out the tail pipe.  So cat converter is probably dead, but if you don't have a emission test to go through, and your car is over 25 years old so you don't, there is nothing to worry about.  It won't affect the way the car runs.

Hey Ken what about the Heat Riser  Remember my problem.

Welcome the the site Pace Car-Ron, glad to see another Pace Car owner on here, now I won't feel so all alone  .......

Ron check out this thread https://www.c3vr.com/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=64829&PN=1 the heat riser is a very common cause of rattles and mine seemed to lessen as the engine heated up.

Welcome once again
