Ok, so I have the wiring diagrams, and the best I can figure is that there shouldn't be a switch to raise and lower my antenna.  But there is, right there under the steering column.  I took off the pannel under the column, and the switch has 6 leads, some red, some green (but no dark green, grey, or orange).

Now here's my question: The radio in the car is an aftermarket, and the previous owner never hooked up the power antenna lead.  Instead of manually operating the antenna, I'd rather the radio do it for itself, just as it's supposed to.  Should the 78 have a power antenna manual switch?  If not, I can take it out, but which color lead off the antenna relay (which I know is in the console, but haven't searched it out yet) should the single power antenna wire from the aftermarket stereo be attached to?

Assuming your antenna is the original or at least a "GM service replacement" the yellow wire from the antenna relay goes to the radio. If you originally had a AM/FM/CB radio there might be a switch to manually operate it.   Mike

If the power antenna is original GM, then there will be a relay inside the rear of the console, just ahead of the parking brake lever. If the relay isn't there, the power antenna is an aftermarket.

looks like it's aftermarket then.  No relay, at least I can't find it.  Right in front of the parking brake is the power window switches, and some relay with only 3 wires on it (I know the antenna relay has more wires).  I'm thinking that maybe the power antenna wasn't stock.

The switch for the power antenna that's there has 6 wires.  I'm assuming a set for each stage of the antenna movement (extend, retract, and neutral).  Now I have to figure out how to wire the single power antenna lead from the radio to it!  Any ideas?

Ok, back to the antenna problem.  I've looked around everywhere near the parking brake lever, and after looking at the 78 Electircal Troubleshooting Manual, looks like there's no relay.  I'm toying with the idea of installing the stock relay and taking the manual up/down switch out.

I have the wiring diagrams for the relay, but it only tells me the wire colors, and not which lead on the relay does what.  Anyone know which lead on the relay does which function, or at lease which lead on the relay correlates to which stock wire color?

Also, the currently installed switch for the antenna has 6 wires attached to it (I assume two of the wire are for each phase - down/off/up).  I'm thinking that these wires correlate to the stock white, dark green, and grey wires.

Any thoughts?

Since you live in Florida, I would take the switch out because there is no chance that the antenna will freeze either up or down.  When the antenna freezes, it will eat the gears.  Many folks who live in a very cold climate put the switches in the power lead to the antenna to keep it from freezing so it is possible that the car once lived in a colder place.

It was actually originally titled in Chicago, so that makes sense.  I plan on taking the switch out, but still trying to figure out how.
