It's always something.  The last few times I've driven my 79, the radio puts out this horrible BUZZZZZZZZZZZZ, it sound like a realy high-pitched crackling, actually.  Like a blow speaker would sound.  It come from all four speakers, but the it sounds worse from the back speakers, I think because of their size and bass ability.  I also have low-end surpression on front speakers.  Anyway, I can't relate the noise to any particular car movement or anything except that it started about 5 minutes into my ride this morning, I guess after it warmed up.

Any ideas what new problem has come up on my lovely piece of machinery?

Adam,
Did you try playing a CD/tape to see if the buzz is still there ? If it is, then it most likely be a speaker issue.
If not, then it could be a weak signal, ground wire, a ignition wire going bad, or what's known as solar flaring, which at certain times of the year affect radio signals.

Does it get louder when you rev the engine? It may be a bad ground or an alternator issue.

Is the noise AM only or FM as well? Does the noise increase and decrease with engine rpm's? If so, it could well be an alternator whine...the built in noise suppressors could have gone bad...either on the alternator or what's built-in to the radio.

Vette(s): My 1974 Vette sold last August 2014. I am still willing to show up to events and local gatherings if anything happening No new vette yet.
if it isnt any of that it is most likely your headunit.  time to replace it.  basically your output on the radio has gone bad and is typically more money to fix than to buy a new radio. this ocurred in my subaru and my friends old cadillac. I used to be a installer at a shop. i have a certification in installing, school educated and all.   i have seen this quite a bit. then again it could be a ground like the others are mentioning, that is the easiest one to fix with less money involved.  if you can, check if any wires are exposed to metal near the speakers or such, one could be stripped and shorting once in a while by tapping other metal in the car or the frame.

Ya SURE it's yer radio buzzin there, Adam?!

On top of the already mentioned maladies, it could be an amp problem in the radio. You should mention if it is the stock set-up, or aftermarket. And...is it still doing it? I'd be leaning toward an alt. noise, too...

1st a question. Have you made any recent electrical componet changes? Plugs, plug wires, distributer or cap, etc?
All of the things mentioned in the other threads are possible although I though I would ask something more simple & obvious.

Does the radio make that noise with the ignition on and engine not running.? This should elimate motor interference from your diagnosis.

Whenever I hear a new strange noise in any of my cars, I turn up the volume on the radio. Does this help?
I have ridden in your Vette before. Get a new radio. That aftermarket one you have has outlived its life.
Go for one of the new digital, satelite ones. Then you can listen to tunes all day. dwright2006-11-11 05:06:55
