Where is the exact location of the Tank Sticker on a 1971 Corvette LS-5? Is it visible when you open the gas filler cap?

The "Build Sheet", commonly referred to as the tank sticker, is on the top of the fuel tank. It can be on either side. You can sometimes see the sheet if you take the fuel filler lid off, and the rubber "gasket/bowl" that fits around the filler neck out. You won't be able to read it from there, but if it's there, and you can see it, you can decide to remove the fuel tank to retrieve it. You may need to use a bright light and a flexible mirror to get down in the hole to look at the tank.
Sometimes, if you take the spare tire tub out, you can get a mirror up in between the tank and the rear of the body, and see if there is a build sheet there.
Good luck with your search!

Does anyone know why GM placed the built sheet on top of the tank?

I think it would have served the owner(s) more if it had been placed in a more weather-proof location such as under the carpet...... inside the car someplace.

Rob,

My sticker was on the driver's side, top of the tank.

Rich,

Truth be told, very little thought as to the owner recovering the tank sticker was on the mind of the assembly line worker. Also, the first owner of the car got the window sticker listing all options & other related dcoumentation.

On the line, the order sheet (build sheet, tank sticker) was a multiple carbon copy form (7 pages?) that was used to ensure that the car was equipped correctly. The order sheet copy on the tank was there to ensure that the correct engine & such were installed. The hand written number on the sheet corresponds to the car's order in line.

Once the body was dropped on the car, other copies of the order sheet were used to determine the interior options & such. Copies of these sheets have been found behind the radio or gauges & under the seat or carpet. Most of these were discarded by service techs and such.

When these cars were considered "used cars," not much value was placed on this documentation. That is why the "tank sticker" is so highly prized, it is usually the last part of a car anyone works on, short of a bad tank or accident.

                                                      Here's mine.....

Hope this helps,

Anthony

My tank sticker was also on the drivers side. Even if it's there, you'll probably have problems reading much of it after 36 years. I have mine but it's really useless because you can't read anything on it. Good Luck!!

Anthony is right. The Build sheet/Tank sticker wasn't put there just to annoy future restorers. It was glued to the top of the tank so it would be accessible to the line workers assembling the car. There have been many people find copies behind the speedo cluster, behind the seat backs, under the seats in the springs, and even between the rear strut rod bracket and the differential.
My '74 was also on the driver side, or at least you can still see the glue where it was.
There were no specs regarding which side it was to be on.

Jim, if you make a clear copy of the sheet, there are some neat tricks that can be done on the computer to help bring out some of the text.

Rob,GO FOR IT!!!!!!!!!!

If you are the second owner chances are 99% that it is still there.
Mine was just retrieved back in Dec. Mine also was on the drivers
side. After removing the gas cap and rubber boot i turned out the
lights turned on the flash light and put my face on the deck, low and
behold there it was. The sticker adds thousands to the price of a car
like mine and maybe yours.I have a 69 BB side pipe tri-power T-top.
They only made 2722 of these. The previous owner of 33yrs put in a
two tone crushed velvet interior in the 70's. He showed it a lot in car
shows and the calvalcade of customs.I will be putting a original factory
in the car. Wanted to be sure if it was weave or leather.Beleave it or
not you can read 90% of the sticker. It had 2412ad bright blue leather,
L71AA-435 turbo-jet,2K66BA transistor ign.,370 posi,M21AC four speed
soft-ray tinted glass,2N14AB side mounted exhauat and the 2F41AC
special purpose heavy suspens. Also car (wrote in pencil) #1888,
built 3/13/69.It also has the car color, order number and the dealer
number. In April the plant went on strike until June 10th. Now at the
assembly plant it has the build sheet hanging on the front of the radatior.
DO!! not try to remove this sticker unless you drop the tank. This paper
is so brittle. I hope this gives you a little insight. I will make a copy of
the sticker and glue that back on the tank. I will guard the orginal like
it is my first BORN.

Butch - thanks for the great information. I just got the title from my dad last night. I have a friend doing some title search work to get the names of the original owner. I may in fact be the third owner of the car. My dad bought the car in July of 1977. It has a C title dated 7/27/77, which may indicate the third owner was my dad. I still consider myself the 3rd owner since it has been in the family for 30 years (and luckily we have the same name).

The car has been restored (body and interior 2 years ago) and I just had the entire engine compartment done over the winter and I am dying to drive it. Based on information from the company who did the work, it is an original BB 454 LS5 - all matching numbers. I really want to get the correct information from the build sheet/tank sticker to verify all of the options and the originality of the car.

I had the opportunity to drive this car as I was growing up and then it sat in my dad's garage for years. We made the decision to have it restored a few years ago. My dad recently became ill so I decided to comlpete the job, verify the car, and hopefully have some fun with the car again.

Thanks again.

Rob Riz

The tank sticker on my 18,000 mile 71 LS 5 is still on the tank, and it's on the passenger side! I was able to see and feel it through the gas filler neck. Good luck keep us posted. Kevin
