Hi folks, FNG here!

I have several old friends that told me about this forum so I thought I would check it out.  I already have a problem I need some assistance with.  I have a 71 small block coupe, all original with factory air.  I had my AC repaired recently and was told the "idle kick up" solenoid appeared not to be working.  I thought it was the original part but perhaps it is not.  It has a single wire running to the forward end of it (radiator side) and a little plunger in the rear (firewall side).  It has a white label with red lettering.  I believe the PN is 1111444 but not really sure.  I actually don’t know if it is the right part to begin with.  I don't believe there are any vacuum line ports on the front of the solenoid.  The RPM drops when the AC is turned on and it (the plunger) does not activate when the key is turned to the pre-start position.  What is the source of power for the solenoid when the AC is activated?  What is the source of power when the ignition key is turned on.  I want to chase sparks and learn the troubleshooting procedures.  I do have a 71 assembly manual and both GM chassis manuals.  I guess I need to start reading.  Any ideas or recommendations are greatly appreciated.

Thanks for the help in the past Ken!

Does anyone have a picture of the correct part or correct part number?

If required, where do the vacuum lines connect?

Where does the 12-volt wire tie into the electrical system?

Sorry about the dumb questions and thanks in advance,

Start by running a jumper wire from good power (like the terminal on the alternator) to the solenoid to see if it works.  If it doesn't, there is one currently on eBay for $45.00, including a picture.  If the solenoid is good, post your email address, and I will send you a copy of the wiring diagram for your car so you can trace where power should come from.

I have one of those on my LT-1.  It is not for the a/c.  It is an ant-dieseling solenoid.  When you start the car it is energized and when you turn the key off it is de-energized.  I have converted mine to be an a/c stop.  I tapped into the wire that energizes the a/c compressor and ran it to the solenoid.   The original wire (tan) went into the wiring harness near the wiper motor.  Mine is on a Holley carb (LT-1).  Don't know what you have.

Originally, those solenoids were used as A/C "Kickers"....to raise the idle speed with the compressor running. Where Federal Emissions started taking over in the late '60s/early '70s, it was used to drop the engine rpm when the key was turned off, to keep the engine from dieseling, and to stop fuel vapors from escaping back thru the carb. The only real difference in the usage is where the solenoid gets it's power....from the A/C line, or the ign. switch.
My '74 didn't have the solenoid when I bought the car. I looked for one for about a year, and finally found the correct one with the bracket...for $250!!! Needless to say, I almost gave up at that point.
Then, just a day or so later, I had a truck come into the shop for a carb O/H....yup. This truck had MY solenoid on it, and it worked! So....I talked the guy out of it!
A couple of days later, I was moving some crap around in my barn, and ran across an older Quadrajet off of something....yup IT had the solenoid too!!! Now I have two of them!

Anyway, back to the subject... these solenoids will operate differently, depending on original intent. The A/C control solenoids will actually raise the throttle/idle when engaged.
The idle stop/anti-diesel solenoids will NOT.Adams' Apple2009-02-13 21:38:17
