Topic: [Cuyahoga Falls, OH] Ohio gathering - 8/26/2006
in Forum: Mid West Region Events
I am considering/planning a Local gathering in Cuyahoga Falls OH, or nearby. At this time I am thinking a cook out and a cruise. We will be looking at July or August. I do not have definate plans as of yet, and will keep you posted as I go along.
I am open to suggestions. I am wondering how may are interested, and what they would like to do. This can be a short time, or an all day event. Should I invite the local Corvette club?
I guess I'm going to start small in scope, hopefully large in numbers. I would like to evolve this into a larger event in the future. Perhaps even tie it in with some local events. Maybe not. We have some good hotels/motels in the area for those who want to come from a bit farther away.
So what do you think? Chime in.
Ken,
We would love to come up and join you and the others for a cruise and food. We would only be able to go sometime in August. We plan on going to Carlisle (25th to 27th) so if those dates we will have to miss the gathering.
We are not worried if anything goes on. Just to sit down and chat is all we would love to do with you and the others. Sometimes skipping out resturants and shows are good for the soul.
I went to the Park and Recreation dept, and reserved the site and paid the $40. for the day. Not a bad price at all. These things fill up quick! The only weekend day still open in July or August was Aug 26. So I grabbed it. I hate to hear it conflicts with Carlisle. I would have to find another location, or go into September.
Mike, I would hate to miss you. So I guess I will at least start to plan on Aug 26, unless everyone would like to go into September or October. There are still dates open then.
The location is WaterWorks Park in Cuyahoga Falls OH. Very nice place. We will have a pavillion that will hold 60. There is lots a parking next to the pavillion. Restrooms very close by. And right next to the Cuyahoga River. Easy to get to from the highway, only two turns and about a mile. Charcoal grills on site. Electricity and water.
Once again, I ask for input. Should I reschedule for later? Who can make it?
We'd love to come. I've been thinking about visiting my aunt in Leavittsburg - which is only about 30 miles or so from you - so I could "kill two birds with one stone" as they say. September would be a better choice with Carlisle on the last weekend of August and most other August weekends are already filled up with something. Keep us posted and we'll see what we can do. Would love to meet you and any other C3VRers that can make it.

Ken:
I'm intrigued. I think Cuyahoga Falls is a beautiful city, and I would love to be able to make it down there to meet you and others. For now, though, I'm going to have to play it by ear. You just never know what might happen between now and then.
For those staying overnight I am going to suggest they check into the old Quaker Oats factory/silo that was remodeled into an upscale hotel. I haven't stayed there personally, but have been through their gift shops and have eaten in the fabulous restaurant in the basement.
Then there is the hotel I did stay in while I was there, which is right on the river by the falls, just off the highway. Can't remember it's name. I think you told me once you live only a few blocks from it.
Keep us informed on the event. Hopefully I'll be able to make it...wife or not.
fyi - September has some dates for other events to be aware of that could draw folks away:
- Labor Day weekend has the NCM Anniverary Celebration in BG
- MAM's FunFest is the 15th-17th
- NCM R8C Xperience Reunion in BG the 28th-30th
Those hit 3 of the 5 weekends in September!
And don't forget about C3X the 12th-14th October!
I can see the schedule will be a bit rough.
The Hotel by the river right off of the highway is the Sherton Suite Hotel. And yes, it's only about 4 or 5 blocks from my house. I can make a list of local room if anyone would like me to do that. There are several good ones, and some very decent ones, and a few dives .
Cuyahoga Falls is not fancy, but it is a beautiful city. It borders on a national park. Not huge, but very nice. On the other side we have Akron. There is a lot of history in this area. Perhaps the cruise will include Derby Down where the National Soap Box Derby is held. And that would put us next to the Goodyear Blimp hanger. This is a HUGE structure. It is free standing, no floor to ceiling supports, and will hold something like 4 football fields. It was, and I think still is, the largest structure like it in the world. 40 or so miles south puts you in Amish country. Hale Farm and Village is a working farm community from the 1800s. People are in costume and behaving like daily life in that era. Very cool. Blossom Music Center is here. We have a riverfront area and mall where there are car shows, live bands every summer Friday, and all kinds of events. Summit Racing is 5.5 miles from my front door. The name Summit comes from Summit Co. Ohio.
Lots to think about. Should the cruise be a rally? I can plan a route to hit lots of things. What would you folks like to do? I think this will turn out to be a lot of fun. And a course, my daugher Megan will be along. She is going to help make plans.

Ken:
Fougeddaboudit! There's no way you can plan your gig around all the other gigs that happen during the summer months. The people who want to come, but are torn between attending your function or another just have to make a choice and live with it.
Like I said, I would love to attend, but will play it by ear. I will however watch the posts to see what you are planning. The biggest thing for me this year is going to be cost of gas!!!! I'm pretty sure the Pride and Joy will probably not see the light of day as much as I'd like this summer just due to that!
I'll be contacting you later, when I start to attempt that whole ultimate timing by pressure thing the forum was discussing a few months ago, for your advice and guidance. P&J started backfiring last year when I put her away for the winter when I would take my foot out of the throttle, so I think she's due for a look at the timing.
Anyway, like I said, make your plans and those of us who can attend, will, the others will make their choices and either live by them or regret them. Even if you only get one other Vette to attend, it's a start, but don't worry...that Vette will probably be me!
